Hello,

A week ago I trapped a Siamese cat that I had been feeding outside my door since at least spring. It's starting to get very cold here in NY, so I decided this kitty is too beautiful, and I wanted to find him a home. I have done this, and he will be going to his forever home on December 23. I found a free neuter clinic, who gives shots also, and that is scheduled. He is a chocolate point Siamese. I ran a  'found ad' in the local newspaper, but nobody responded, which doesn't surprise me.

I have four inside cats of my own. I cannot take him for testing for the diseases cats get, because of my very limited income. And besides that, it would traumatize my kitties to have to adjust to him, when I don't feel it's necessary, because he isn't staying. So, he is separated from mine, in the bathroom.  He is very friendly. But now that he is getting use to being inside, and he feels better, he wants to go outside. Or at least explore the rest of the apartment, which I cannot let him do.

He is doing a lot of night time howling.
  <<<This is me

Poor baby, that's how sad it gets sometimes. I feel badly for him, but don't know what to do. I do lay on the floor in there with him for a few hours of sleep each night, but I have back issues, and can't lie there all night.

He isn't neutered, I am so sure this is part of the problem.

That will be taken care of on the 23rd.

Is there anything I can do to discourage the night time howling while I am waiting?  I have feliway, that isn't doing the trick, I have rescue remedy, which I am going to try tonight. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I was going to suggest Feliway, but you've already tried that. Is is possible to leave a radio on for him in there? Some cats feel less abandoned/lonely when they have a TV on, but that's probably not feasible in a bathroom. Hopefully somebody with a better suggestion will come along.

Feliway doesnt always kick on immediately. Quite often it takes about a week to work fully. Besides, howling and meowing at nights is what toms and studs do.  That is one big reason why it is mostly merciful to neuter them studs as soon their breeding carrier is over.    :)

I mean, it is not sure "the prisoner" is terribly suffering.

He isnt enjoying himself no, but it is "just the hormones".

So, I agree, Feliway and radio on. TV if possible may be useful.

You CAN try with Rescue Remedy, or some other of the series... There are over 20 remedies in the Dr Bach´s drops serie.    This Rescue Remedy most well known and often useful for us cat fanciers.

Good luck!  *vibes*

AWW Sounds like a beautiful cat!! He is definitely howling due to being confined and away from you, but more so due to him not being neutered. He also knows there are other cat's in the house - he can smell them and that will also get his "hormones" spiking. :(. There is not much you can do other than what was suggested above - the Feliway - rescue remedy - or you could call the vet (the one who will do the neuter) and ask them if there is anything you can give him to help him settle in and settle down until he is neutered. There are also natural remedies for calming, you could call a local natural pet food store and see what they have. How wonderful you already found a home for him. :D :clap: Good job :clap:

I do have a radio I can put in there with him, no problem. All in all, it is a small price to pay to make sure he is safe, warm, and cared about until he goes to his forever home. I will try leaving the radio on for him and see if that helps. As far as getting medicine from my vet, since I cannot afford to have him examined, that won't happen. He is scheduled for a local Save Our Strays free clinic on the 23rd. He will go to his forever home that night. It's just a few weeks away. Thank you for all the suggestions. Merry Christmas Everyone!

Hang in there - and does not matter if you can't afford the vet for this - this kitty is safe/sound and receiving excellent care from you. Try not to worry too much about him being confined. He WILL adjust and you only have about a week and a half before his neutering and his new life begins :clap:. So having to put up with a little bit of howling and keeping him confined is a small price to pay for the wonderful future that awaits him :D :D :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
