I have been looking into growing plants for my kitten do any of you do this? I was considering growing wheat grass but it looks like you have to throw it away and start over every 1-2 weeks I would like something lower maintenance.

I have succulents and my kitten picks them out of the pot eats the tips then chases them around the house she also eats my hamster food despite being free fed dry food ( blue buffalo wilderness) and getting one can wet food daily so I am thinking she just wants plants. Btw all my succulents are non toxic and after this I will not be keeping any more but I still need something to keep her content.

What about growing catnip?  It's safe, grows for a while, and can be used in cooking like mint.

I've seen catnip plants (in plastic pots) in the produce section at Publix. I'm sure you could find them at a garden center.

I don't believe catnip plants will have any big effect unless they know to break the plant, as its the oil released from crushing it that attracts them if I'm not mistaken.    Then it wouldn't be low maintenance though, as a plant can't be healthy and grow if its being chomped and romped on all the time.

So unconcentrated living catnip may be "fresh" but I bet you it'd be far less effective than buying some processed concentrated stuff online.

Really cats don't need plants, that hamster food is likely unhealthy and should be kept away, and eating too much of that wheat grass can induce vomiting.   I tried it, but it seemed expensive with no real benefit I could find evidence of online.   They liked it, but I just got them toys instead.

For example you could get little springs like these:

And your kitty would likely spend just as much time munching on it, but it never goes bad, and no concerns of ingesting too much and puking.

If you do want to get plants, I'd just make sure they aren't on the no-no toxic list, but do your best to keep it out of reach else they may make a mess and/or destroy it.   If its purely for aesthetic value, make sure there are no small parts they'd want to eat, and just get an artificial one IMO.

I grow oat or wheat grass for mine, the seeds are extremely cheap from a health food shop. We have a catnip plant some of the cats roll in when outside (enclosure), they don't seem to need the leaves crushed to attract them.

Anyone know if the Chia seeds are okay for cats to nibble on.  It's that time of year again, and Chia plants in the shape of various animals are being advertised on tv.

Wonder if there is a mouse-shaped-chia plant!

Thanks.

From what I've found, the Chia Pet plant is, well, Chia, which is Salvia Hispanica or Salvia Columbariae.  It's part of the mint family and is non-toxic.  So, yeah, they could eat it.

thanks!  This time of year, it's difficult to grow cat grass outdoors.  And Ritz is practically addicted to the stuff.  It's pretty much the only carbs she gets (I feed her frankenprey/commercial raw.)
