I caved in over the summer and bought a Nook. I looked at Kindle, but liked the Nook better. I'm really loving it, and reading a lot more than I used to before I got it. I just got the basic reader, all I want to do with it is read.

I'm on the fence about getting an e-reader of any kind. Mainly because the only place I really have a chance to read is at work (I work in a call center and there can be a LOT of down time between calls. It's allowed to read, do crafts, etc). However, they no longer allow electronic devices such as e-readers, i-pods, etc to be used at our desks due to security reasons, so it would probably be a waste of money for me. Of course, if someone (other than my husband) gave me one I certainly wouldn't turn it down. When I think about all the books available I just

Are the books available new releases or old books? I read so much that I usually am waiting for the next book by my favourite authors and I would guess those new releases are not free.

you can get them free... Although most of the books I have been buying are less than $2 each. Amazon has a very large selection of bargain books and have specials every day/week/month it just depends on what you have! You can also borrow some books from friends, but they only last 2 weeks and you can only borrow once. Most new books are the same or less as the hardbacks.

I never thought I'd lie an e-reader, but then our library leant them out to all staff to try and it was actually kind of cool. The only reason don't have one yet? They aren't cheap in Canada and ~$150 is more than our frivolities budget can handle at the moment...if the price comes down here, though, it's a definite Christmas present idea.

I LOVE my Kindle and I have pre-ordered the Kindle Fire. I was almost drooling when looking at the darn thing online. We already have an Amazon Prime membership, so I will be able to stream just about anything!!!!!! The lack of 3G is a no issue for me, house is Wi-Fi and most of the places I frequent also have Wi-Fi.

Amazon is not trying to compete with IPad and thats where the techoheads get their reviews loused up. The specs on the Fire look pretty good (hubby is a hardware god, it is what he does for a living). One just has to remember that at its heart, it is an ereader and it comes packaged with some nice extras.

I am so looking forward to November 15th (Fires release date) and November 16th, the day mine will arrive at the fabulous husbands office and he will bring it home all set for me to sit down and read!!! He is moving the content from JG (yes the Kindle has a name LOL) to the upgraded version so I dont have to.

btw, Calibre makes content from any source useable. Download it!!!

People whined about how Kindle did not use epub...no need to worry with this program.

On the west side of... of... somewhere.
Being a writer myself, I've been resisting getting an ereader, even though both of my books are available for nearly every ereader out there (mostly through the website I'll mention shortly). I've put the basic $79 kindle on my Amazon wishlist now. Why, you may ask? 1: the price is decent; 2: I can put my non-fiction books on it. I still kinda prefer my fiction in my hands; 3: I can then get rid of most of my non-fic books and make more room for a cat tree in my dinky apartment. Also (okay, #4): my school bookstore, along with many others, has started selling/renting textbooks to e-books. I'd much rather carry a lightweight Kindle or other ereader around than a bunch of heavy books.

Now, the website I mentioned: www.smashwords.com ... A lot of writers like myself put their books up there, for ALL formats... even Kindle, and at decent prices... my books on there are about $5. It gets my name out there. A lot of other books are on there as well. It's a great website for ereaders...

Now I just need one. Maybe Santa will find me this year...

I got the 3rd generation kindle last year for Christmas and I absolutely love it. They have hundreds of free books as well. Most of the free ones are the classics but I love the classics so its all good. :-) The free books are nice because if you're on a tight buget like I am, you can't always spare $4-9 on a book. I have probably about 80 books on my Kindle right now and I think only about 7 are books I paid money for, the rest are the free ones.
I admit that I do love reading actual physical books BUT you can only carry so many on you at a time. I love the Kindle's battery life AND storage capacity. Plus they have the free Kindle apps for your computer or smart phone which makes it nice if you happen to forget your kindle at home. Its also nice that all your kindle books that you've bought are saved on your amazon account, so if you do ever run out of room on your kindle, you can delete books off your kindle without worrying about loosing them forever.

I get TONS of books for free and there are always new ones popping up not just classics or random books noone would really read. I also love that I can get books that dont really come out in print or come out on ebook first before being printed. Having my Kindle app also gave me access to quite a few new authors I wouldnt have bought in paperback. The downside, I got hooked on a series from a little novella that I got for free........I ended up absolutely having to have the rest of the series...at that point there were 10 books in it and its not done. Im currently waiting on book 12 which comes out in December. The nice thing is I can preorder them and they come right on my phone the day its released. I still get actual books though. But I only buy Nora Roberts to keep on my shelf. I also like that most books I get are only like $4. Especially the old Zebra historicals.

Because if Im going somewhere I dont want to have to cart my computer AND Kindle around just to look for free books or buy books. Its a pain in the butt viewing the book selection on my computer, Ive tried it and hate it. Especially since almost daily Im finishing a book and looking for more so its easier if I can access the web right on the Kindle and search for books rather than waiting to do it on my computer and then transfering them onto the Kindle. As of right now a Kindle is not happening for me because I have my smart phone and downloaded the Kindle app on it. I would love to get the Kindle so I can delete the app on my phone since it is literally killing my memory. I have a ton of books on my app and even putting them in archives they are still on my phone. Id love to get more books but I have to limit the ones I do get because of taking up space I dont have. A Kindle itself would solve my current issue.

Can you "lend" books on Kindle? On the nook, you can friend other nook users and borrow books back and forth. If you can do that, you can start a thread to lend books back and forth!!!

I have the Nook color. Got it for my birthday in August. It might be more useful to me than to a lot of people, though, because I'm in school. I got almost all of my textbooks for this semester on it through the B&N Store (I'm a history and political science double major, so I read A LOT), so that saves my back from having to lug around a giant bag of books 5 days a week. And the internet browser is great for when you want to quickly look up something in class, check e-mail, etc. and a computer isn't readily available.

I wouldn't have bought it if my laptop was lighter.
But I love it, it's great. Hardly any bugs so far, but I do need to figure out how to get Flash stuff to play on it... oh well.

Now, if I wasn't interested in the internet aspects of it, and just wanted a pure e-reader, I would go with B&N's new Simple Touch or whatever it is, or more likely the new $79 Kindle thing.

As far as I know that option is not available for Kindle but I wont be surprised if it does come soon.

I just did some googling about the whole borrowing from the library thing and my local library does that. I never got a library card because Im horrible about remember to take stuff back on time but if I can borrow books on my Kindle app and then it just takes care of itself..heck yeah Im on board with that. I even double checked to make sure that most of the books I do read or books I want to read but am not willing to buy are available and they are. It is awesome since most of the books I want to read are older and arent available to be bought in a store but are in ebook format. So Im gonna be getting a library card and giving that whirl. It would be nice to constantly get new books to read without having to pay for them and then they wont take up all that memory on my phone.

Honestly its kind of amazing how many places have free wifi, I dont use the 3g on mine that much! Many many restaurants offer wifi, as well as a lot of stores now!

You can lend certain books and you can get them from the library. The lending option is only available one time and for only 2 weeks at a time right now, I really hope they change it a little.

If you're not near a computer or wifi hotspot you can browse Amazon or the web for books and download them anywhere. If I'm out walking Jamie and finish a book, I just download another. Ditto on the train, in a doctor's waiting room, when we're in Hungary (the house there has no phone or internet connection), sitting in a park, etc.. I could do it with my smartphone, but that's slower and not as pleasant to read.

I've downloaded > 250 books, over half of them free, and still have over 200 on the Kindle, since I just delete the ones I know I won't want to read again.

Right now I'm re-reading a hardback Mary Stewart trilogy that isn't available as a legal download. It's heavy, I can't adjust the font size, and I'm finding that annoying. I thought I might miss "real books", but find I really prefer an e-reader.

There is one particular website that I LOVE and where you can get pretty much ANY book for free, both old AND new releases. My e-library is currently beyond well stocked.
Anyone can feel free to message me if they'd like the web address.

I adore my Kobo, and it goes wherever I go. Yosemite, I too used to think the way you do, but now that I HAVE the Kobo, I can't imagine life without it. I was running out of places to keep books! Also, I would always have to lug around more than one book if I was almost done one...because if I finished one, I better have another one right on hand!
Now I don't have to worry about any of that.

My Mom has the Sony E-Reader and also loves it. She reads the same types of books that I do but doesn't have the internet, so all of the books I download, I'll just load on to her Sony whenever she comes over.

The downside is that I dont really go anywhere that has free wifi. I cant even pick anything up at my house. My internet is off my cell phone plan, and if Im going to Mcdonalds where they have free wifi...Im going to eat not read. LOL its a big downside to being a homebody and living in the boonies where you cant get cable or high speed internet..let alone wireless internet. 3g is one of those things where if I spend the money on a Kindle its gonna have to be on it since the few place we do go where I would take it dont have wireless internet, like families houses and dfs work.

I didnt know anything about the lending on Kindle because there arent many people I know who have a Kindle AND read the same books that I read. I am however estatic about the library lending. Im going to the library on Thurs to get a card and give that a whirl. I need to hook my phone up to my comp anyways to back up some pics so Im gonna get some books while Im doing that and give it a whirl....maybe even get some 'real' books while Im at the library. LOL

I have a Kobo and I hate it

It doesn't keep the charge AT ALL and there's nothing worse getting into bed at night to read and realizing your book is dead!

It ticks me the heck off

I've read about 6 books on it, had to charge it daily just to finish the books, it's been shoved in a drawer ever since! I wish I had have gotten the Kindle instead!

The library's books are mostly recent releases.

Now...how long do you think it will take for B&N to match the $199 price on their Color Nook?

Ummm, chicky, I would SERIOUSLY bring it back and exchange it! My charge usually lasts at LEAST 10 days, usually closer to 2 weeks, and I read all the time! Sounds like you got a lemon.
