There was a tiny kitten (probably much too young to be away from its mother) in the parking lot at DH's work today. I figure someone who knows us might have dumped it there. I doubt if a kitten that small would have wandered off on his own. One of his little eyes was matted shut. I haven't seen the kitten yet; he's spending the night at the vet's. I am not sure yet if he will have to be bottle fed. I'm excited about him because I love the thoughts of a kitten, but mad at the same time, because of the whole situation. DH works at a busy place on a busy highway. The kitten could have easily gotten hit by a car before DH even got to work. My mil's cat of about 20 years died just last week and she has agreed to take him. She isn't overjoyed about it, because she has two indoor cats and wasn't in the market for another. But she is kind-hearted and will give him a loving home.

Well, that is one lucky little tiny kitten that your DH found him. And for your MIL to agree to help this kitten is very much kind-hearted as you are too
Loads of vibes that this little kitten will be alright
Please keep updating on how the kitty is doing.

Thank you. I hope he is going to be okay. I worry, especially with him being so little.

The odds are very good that mama was moving him from one place to another and got interrupted. There are other possibilities. His mother might have had a nest somewhere hidden on a car or truck (one of our Animal Control Officers raised a litter of kittens that was born under the hood of a big truck over a long weekend).

My brother works at Wal-Mart, overnight supervisor. A couple weeks ago, a small black kitten just walked right through the automatic doors at 3 in the morning. They're at the edge of town, no neighborhoods close enough for a kitten to wander from. He must have come in on a farm truck. My brother brought him home and wants to keep him. . .SIL is not happy; this makes 4 cats for them. I told her it must be genetic
.

Hope this little kitty has many happy years with your MIL!

DH has made an executive decision to leave the kitten with the vet one more day. We will pick him up first thing in the morning. I can't wait to see him. I agree it is possible that a stray cat could have had him and he somehow got separated from his mom. I appreciate being reminded, because I have been going through a mental list of suspects of who could have left him there. I am suspicious-minded (maybe it comes from working in a correctional setting), but I've also had people say to my face that the next time a cat/kitten comes to their house they are going to drop it off at mine.

I am so happy this wee baby is getting a home. I am so glad your hubby took care of him and he is now safe. Kudo's to all of you.

To update those who haven't seen my previous thread, DH found a tiny kitten at work. It was pouring rain Thursday and the kitten came limping up to him in the parking lot. DH took him to the vet and we were supposed to pick him up today. But when we got there, the receptionist told us that he has Cocida (sp) and also needs ointment for the eye infection (one of his eyes was matted shut when he found DH.) His hip is injured but not broken. We decided to leave him at the vet's until Monday or Tuesday so he would be almost finished with his meds when we take him to Mil's. Since Mil isn't thrilled about getting another cat (though she'll give him a good home), we want things to be as easy on her as possible.

Anyway, they let me go back and meet him at the vet's office today. DH was right; this kitten is tiny. I'm guessing three or four weeks old. He has bright blue eyes, but they'll probably change. He looks like my RB kitty Marshallow
. Cow kitten with a sharp, pointed nose. Since they came from the same place, though a few years apart, maybe this kitten is a distant cousin. The receptionist told me that he was full of fleas so they had to give him a bath. She said he rolled over belly-up when they dried him with the blow dryer. Didn't make a fuss or anything. See what I mean? Marshmallow kitten...

Then I got to take him out of the cage and hold him. At first, I had him against my stomach, but he meowed. I moved him up to my neck so he could feel my pulse and he immediately began to purr and knead
. I promptly named him Louie, because he seemed in need of a tough name. Don't know if Mil will keep the name, but I think she might. It's going to be very hard to give him up. I already love him. I joking threatened to move in with Mil since the kitten is going to be there. ("Oh, Lord," she said, under her breath. I think she was genuinely alarmed. I believe she somehow has the idea that I wouldn't be the easiest creature to live with.
)

One more thing that is off-topic. The vet's office now has a bird in cage in the lobby. His name is Dr. Pickles. I don't know birds, but he looked like a cockatiel (sp). There was no warning sign up about him like with some birds in the pet store ("Keep your hands away from the cage. I bite!") so I put my fingers in his cage, despite being afraid of birds. He was very sweet. I would whistle to him and he would whistle back. The receptionist said they didn't know much about birds, but a man found him in his barn and the vet agreed to take him. She said he was mean, that he bit her and she thumped him on the nose (beak?). As soon as she stuck her fingers in the cage, he started to hiss. I've never heard a bird hiss, but I usually keep my distance from them. DH pointed out that he was shaking. I wonder if he was cold? I felt sorry for him. He was being menaced by one of the office cats; she would not stay away from his cage, which was just slightly out of her reach. It was kind of my vet to take him in, but I bet that bird is very stressed out.

If he has coccidia, he'll need more than a few days meds. Not sure if you can treat a kitten 3 - 4 weeks old for coccidia, but at the shelter here it takes at least 10 days of albon, sometimes 30 days to clear it up.

I agree. It took Daisy about a month to clear and it was bad. We had to take her back to the vet before it was all over with. The receptionist said he would be almost finished with his meds when we pick him up. I am not sure if they are treating him with albon, but I know he is getting some form of liquid medication. She did say his stools are solid, which is a good sign. Mil is willing to give him his medicine, she's a good cat nurse, but we want him to be well on his way to recovery before taking him to her house. It was our decision to leave him at the vet's a few more days rather than hers. The vet is very kind about giving us a discount, so it isn't going to cost us as much as it would at most places. We are very grateful that Mil is going to take him, because it's so hard to find a good home for a kitten. DH's sisters also love cats, but like us they each have three or four of their own and look after strays.

OK - just wanted to be sure! I can think of quite a few vets offhand who treat for 4 days w/ Albon for coccidia, no fecal re-test, nothing. And that very rarely kicks it.

There IS a cure for coccidia, but it's not available in the U.S. It's called Baycox, made by Bayer, and you can only get it for chicken house chickens, etc., in the US. It's used on cats in other countries, such as Australia.

The idea with coccidia is to get it suppressed enough that the kitten's own immune system fights it off. It almost never appears in adult cats, unless they've been under some sort of stress.

Update

The kitten is now home with Mil. He likes to be held; he cries when she puts him down so she's been doing a lot of holding. I am extremely jealous. I am not the jealous type at all, but in this case, I am making an exception. I still want the kitten for my ownself. He seems to be doing good except that he drags one of his back legs. He goes back to the vet for a check-up in one week. I am hoping it will be okay. I once found a stray kitten with a broken leg. The vet we had at the time said it was too late to fix it. As the kitten turned into a cat, he lost his limp. I am hoping the same will be true for this kitten. In any case, he will be loved and will want for nothing. Mil hasn't decided a name a name for him yet; she is thinking about Jake. Missy and Chester, the adult cats, have been spitting (like a pack of wild llamas) and running from him. Missy is fairly young and quite curious to see him, however. I hope to get over there this weekend to take some pictures of him and get to hold him myself.
