Does anyone have or know someone who has this breed?

I am 99.9% sure I will be buying one in the near future. I have done my research and know what I am in for. Drool, enough fur twice a year to knit a sweater, health issues but I just love this breed of dog.

I would like to know how easy they are to train as puppies. Is a fenced yard desired? The doggie will go on many walks and have exercise so I don't plan on just letting the dog free roam. Heck, I sat outside with my daughter while playing outside I think I could do it for a dog.

How often should they be professionally groomed? Of course I will be grooming the dog on a daily basis but is a professional grooming needed? I am lucky enough to have a home where I can easily bathe a long haired dog..not in the bathtub.

Finding a breeder is another concern. I have looked on Petfinder and most of the Newfies on there are mixed. I worry about prey drive and what the dog was mixed with. I would just feel more comfortable with a purebred.

What area of the country are you in?

I'm not sure if she is still breeding, but I might be able to get contact info on my cousin, I know she used to breed Newfie Landseers. If she isn't still actively breeding, she probably knows someone that is.

Professional grooming might help cut down some of the hair/shedding but if you can keep them brushed and bathed it is not necessarily required.
However personally I would not bathe a Newfie at home unless you have a forced air dryer, because their fur takes a LONG time to dry, and it can cause problems if they are left damp.

I live in Ohio. There are a couple breeders around here but I would like to have references.

Rosiemac, I would love to see some pics. To me, they are the most beautiful dogs inside and out.

I am not out to breed or show, I just want a Newfie as a family dog.

Any help anyone could give would be appreciated.

I have always wanted a dog. My father never let me have one while I was little. I discussed with him about getting a pug about a year back and he said "Why don't you just get a St. Bernard?" So I started looking and found the Newfie.

I don't care about fur or drool. I am a mom and have been peed on, pooped on, barfed on..drool is nothing. The job I got a few months ago afforded me a 10K a year increase. I think I can now comfortably afford a dog.

I saw this today and wanted to share:

THE LEGEND OF THE NEWFOUNDLAND DOG

There is a land where the waves explode upon the reef in a boiling foam, there the legend was born.

As the story i s told, God turned one day to contemplate all of his creations and saw on that Newfoundland Isle, flailed by storm a small nation of fishermen, whose rough, weather-beaten people fought courageously against the impervious elements of nature as the freezing cold winter and the unforgiving coastline took its toll, and the sea often asked the sacrifice of human life. Nevertheless, they remained deep-rooted, these men of Newfoundland with the stubbornness as great as their courage.

God saw, and in his infinite compassion, thought how he might alleviate their suffering. He searched among the creatures of his creations but found none that would serve. It was then he decided to create one anew.

He took the body of a bear, whose bone structure lent well to such arduous labours and whose thick fur would resist the bitter Newfoundland cold. Then he thought to sweeten this silhouette with the lithe, flexuous lines and movements of the seal, with all itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s prowess to swim and speedily slip between the waves.

Now turning to the sea, he saw the playful dolphins happily following the ships, their sweet, joy-filled eyes revealing their serene temperament, and more; they so love man that they often rescue them, saving them from the sea. Yes, they too would be part of this creature.

When he had done the moulding and casting, there suddenly appeared in his creative arms, a superb animal with glistening black fur; powerful and sweet in the same moment.

This new being, however, had t o have an allegiance and faithfulness, tried and true, to be able to live beside man and be ever ready to offer his life for his master. It was at that moment that the Lord opened and placed in his chest, the heart of a dog, and the miracle was complete.

From that day onward, those men of the sea had beside them, their courageous companion ever strong, ever faithful the, Newfoundland Dog.

Newfoundland dogs are one of my favorite breeds too :D <<I live in Newofundland, where the breed originated>> There are a few breeders here, I am not sure on AKC standards or whatever you need to check for reputable breeders but ALL the newfs I met seemed in good standards and had great health. I used to walk a diabetic newf for some dude and he was named Tory. Tory liked to lay in the snow in the winter and lick the snow.. Now I don;t know if you did any research into the province the breed comes from but we get pretty nasty winter storms with high winds, up to zero visibility, just gross winter weather. Snow accumulations after drifting can, and have, cover houses. They have a high tolerance for bad weather so if you get a newf be sure to have him cut in warm months. It looks hilarious but it's for their comfort over anything.

Newfs are one of the best and strongest swimmers. They have real webbing between their toes and are trained in Italy as lifeguards (and other places too I'm sure)

Locally, the dogs are just loved. We take pride in developing this universally favorite breed (and the Labrador as well). I can see if I can find the name of the breeder here on Belle Island, and it would be up to you to ship it. I'd say the best Newfoundland dog you could buy would be straight out of the island itself!

The Newfoundland Club has a listing of rescues.  Depending on where you live you might have to drive for one: http://www.ncarescue.org/pages/rescuemap.html

Their home page also has a listing of regional clubs which you could contact to find a reputable breeder.  If you go with a breeder, make sure they test for hip dysplasia and any other genetic diseases.  You can look up any dogs they claim to have tested on www.offa.org.

I completely agree, many years ago we were interested in adopting a Newf who had hip dysplasia.  They also do not have a long life expectancy, as is common with larger breeds.  However, that being said they are truly wonderful and loving companions.  Have you had any luck locating a breeder yet?

Good on you for going ahead with the breed you want! Years ago my Mom helped us get a dog, since our house was in an isolated spot and my husband traveled some on business.

She expected we'd get a German Shepherd, but we looked at breed characteristics in the AKC book and got a Great Pyrenees. Yes, they drool & shed & do not respond to "Come", but they are the right breed for me - cats in a dog suit.

Newfies are different - velcro dogs, like to be right with their beloved owners.

You will be happy with a Newf and do look into Rescue!

Two years after posting this...I will be bringing my puppy home on August 31st.  I thought I knew alot about the breed, but there is always something to learn.

Her name is Fiona Elise.

She's adorable! They're a great breed. My sister had one named Bear. He used to sunbathe on top of the compact car (parked in the backyard).:lol3:

Thanks!

It has been a tough year.  My father was in ill health and I was his caregiver.  I had no more than four hours of sleep every night.  I changed diapers, cleaned vomit and dealt with the verbal abuse that I was subjected to.  One of the fellows I work with asked me if I could deal with the drool.  Drool is nothing compared to pee and poop.
