The birthday boy, Calvin, ended up getting some fiber in his eyes. I saw him squinting while playing and then I went to him and saw a few strands of fiber inside his eyes. He was playing with a catnip toy and I tried to catch him but he bolted. With a minute of so, I held him and DH and I inspected and it seems that there is a 1 single little fiber still there. He does not seem to be in any discomfort at all. He's running around and playing and seems to be acting ok - have been closely watching him and he's fine. I was thinking of keeping a close eye and see early in the morning if it's still there and then call the vet if it's still there. If he seems to be in any distress whatsoever we will take him to the emergency vet. Does that sound reasonable? Or do you reackon we take him in now?

Hard to say. Sometimes I see our cats with specs/fibers/fur on their eyeball and they don't seem to notice it. Usually they remove it themselves or it comes out on its own. Personally, I would wait and see, unless he seems to be in discomfort.

Parker is really bad for getting fur in his eyes. I can see them sometimes going right across the middle of his eye but I've never had to take any of the cats in for it.

Have you tried flushing it out with some saline solution? That might do the trick.

Thanks Luvmyparker and stephanietx! Calvin went for a nap after I posted last evening and then when he woke up and came to us, we saw the fibers on the corner of his eyes - just outside the eyeball. DH went to cuddle him and carefully removed them (I am a little clumsy). We checked his eye and it seems to be clear. I will surely keep the saline water in mind for the future.

That happened the week after I got Dharma - we had been playing with a fishing rod toy. A couple of hours after play, she came up to me and I saw her eye looked quite watery and I thought I could see a little fiber. Called the e-vet; they said if the eye was not really red, swollen shut or nearly slo, or if there were no green or yellow pus, to observe her and then call my own vet in the morning if her eye still seemed swollen, teary, or sensitive. She never let me get close enough to really rinse her eye off (and I have saline solution for my contacts at home).

Being a nervous new mommy, I did take her to the vet, as she seemed a little light sensitive. They did that scan with the light and drops to make sure there were no abrasions, and said she'd probably gotten something in her eye, and gotten it out again. I think they were making me feel better, because I surely wanted the reassurance; wearing contacts myself, I'm very conscious of my eyes and abrasions.

It's tough being a new parent - we have to learn with every bump in the road whether it's time to panic or not. And, yes, I do have both the e-vet and my own vet's number on my cell phone. Why do you ask?
