Hi!

I cut the entryway to the litter box in the middle, as suggested from the catinfo.org site. My cat Tripper would walk in, turn his body and pee. :-)

I have about 2 inches of litter in the box, for me it isn't too heavy.

You've gotten some great advice.

I also need a deeper box because Abby is my dyslexic kitty!  She gets into the box and sometimes forgets to turn around and pees over the edge.  She doesn't spray it on the walls though, just pees over the side onto the floor. I've taken to putting 2 puppy pads under the box so I don't have to constantly worry about washing plastic mats or floors.  When a pad gets soiled, which it does every day or two, I put a new one.

Where do you get the Sterelite bins and how much are they. Would a 16 yr. old be able to JUMP in?

I use the 18 gallon silver ones like GloriaJH posted a picture of. They're $4.97 at Wal-Mart (your prices may vary). I cut a hole just like she does. . .I measure 5 inches up from the bottom. I wouldn't make a 16-year-old cat jump in. The clear ones like otto posted a picture of are not as high--an older cat might be able to jump in. They also cost a little bit more, maybe $6 or $7. I see those at Wal-Mart, too. But most big-box stores have a fairly good selection of plastic totes, so even if you don't shop at Wal-Mart you should be abble to find something suitable.

I pay about $3 for one of those sterilite clear boxes. The sides are 13 inches high. An arthritic senior might have trouble jumping over the side. I did cut a hole for Ootay  's box. I do not use the covers. I don't like enclosed litter boxes.

Her issue was not peeing over the side, or standing up to pee, she needed the sides of the litter box to lean on while she squatted.

Mazy cat (female) is my stander upper. :lol3:

Hi, thanks for all of the information on 'cats peeing standing up'. I took my 12 year old orange tabby to the vet last month. He ran tests and and said he was on the verge of total kidney failure. The tests showed he was on the upper end of the kidney disease "spectrum" but all of his other blood test 'numbers' were great.

The vet prescribed dry and canned kidney food. Tippy likes the dry food, and while he eats canned food twice daily, he didn't care for the canned kidney food at all.

Tippy also begs daily for his treats--Temptations. We have since cut back on the Temptations treats because of their fiber content which I felt was adding to his already slow bowel movements. (Once about every two or three days.) We give treat with more moisture content but it hasn't increased his bowel movements. I have to give him Vaseline every two days or so in order for him to 'go'.

I thought, perhaps, with all of his numbers being fine except one, that his constipation was somehow pinching off the tube that allows the urine to some out, thus making the urine remain in his bladder longer causing the 'false' reading.

Now, back to my question about the large tote to help contain his urine when he just recently started peeing standing up. He goes TO his box, digs a bit, sometimes getting all the way in, but when he stands up to pee, it goes over the top and onto the carpet.

I see where the large tote would prevent THAT, but what prevents the urine from splashing back on the cat. Tippy's shoots out like a fire hose.

I don't know if ALL of his 'accidents' have been because he stands up, but I have witnessed him standing up two times. (He has 'missed' the box about 10 times in the past two weeks or so. He had never used the floor prior to the past couple of weeks.)

You know - dry food is probably the worse thing he could be eating ...  sounds like your cat has more issues than how he pees - please review information written by a Vet about how important food is in our cats' health - http://www.catinfo.org/  I hope this information helps you help your cat back to health.

also you might follow a thread on using Vaseline http://www.thecatsite.com/t/202671/lets-say-no-to-vaseline

Perhaps mix in some of his preferred canned food with the kidney canned food?  I feed all my cats primarily canned food with additional spoons of water added.  They all pee properly (and sometimes hilarious listening to the waterfall while they go in the totes!)  The main thing for your cat is to make sure he is taking in lots of water. Good luck with your kitty!

I just adopted this old man and he walks into the litter box and starts peeing standing up with his tail still hanging out the door.  So pee just shoots out. I went and bought a new litter box today, a booda dome clean step but even with that he shoots it so high that the urine pours through the seams where the hood goes on.  I'm going to try the tall bin with no hole but I'm concerned that he'll have a hard time getting in and out.  How tall are the bins most people are using?  I'm thinking I should get it about 3 inches taller than his back to prevent it from splashing over.

I don't know if he's neutered or not.  I'm taking him to the vet later this week.  He like to orally pleasure himself so I'm thinking he's not.   He's pretty gross but I still like him.

My 3 yr old Oliver has started doing this. I put old towels under the tray. It has only been for a couple of months. I bought a litter tray with higher sides so hope that helps. Sometimes he sits, other times he stands - if I am there I just push his butt down.

At least I was able to get a good specimen this morning! So will take that to the vet to see if there is an infection.

Unfortunately, my boy ended up having quite a few issues and he's passed away. His last days though, I faced the door of the litter box towards the wall and hung a puppy pad on the wall and had another one on the floor between the box and the wall.
