Antibiotic resistence/immunity?

Hi,

I have a question I'd like to bounce off you all regarding a rather complicated situation with my rather complicated cat.

Making a long story short, last year she had a severe allergic reaction that almost killed her when she was on a combo of pred, amoxi-drops and flagyl for a dangerous intestinal issue. Since we don't know which med was the offender (the life-threatening side effects were non-typical and likely something akin to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome), the vet recommended avoiding all three meds as long as possible (and other forms of them) - although we could still try things in the same pharmacological class (no to anything with the same ingredients/make-up as amoxi and flagyl, but yes to other antibiotics).

She's had some dental issues that necessitated clindamycin (antirobe drops) and she's handled that fine, meaning we have at least one option of antibiotic safe for her. However, after being on it for about three doses of .08ml over the course of two days, she threw up after taking it and the vet instructed us to withhold the meds for 48 hours. After those 48 hours, we resumed and she's been on them for the past two weeks. We have our follow-up visit on Monday.

In the meantime, a scary thought hit me this evening. I know that we (and cats) can develop immunities and resistance to antibiotics by both taking them too much and by stopping them too early. What I'm concerned about it whether being on the antirobe for 2 days, then off for 2, then back on is enough to cue an immunity - or whether it would take more days on and more days off. I'm suddenly stuck with fear that we may have just burnt the bridge to the one antibiotic we know is safe for her

Naturally, I know I can ask the vet this on Monday, but on the chance that anyone might have any input this weekend, I thought I'd ask. I doubt I'm the only who knows the nervousness a weekend can breed until Monday when we're nervous about our dear kitties.

I totally understand the worrying part.

I thought my baby was possibly resistant to different antibiotics after seemingly endless UTI's (3 in 6 months) but now it's likely another issue. however, the answers I got from two different vets is that "it's very unlikely for cats to develop resistance to antibiotics. There is always a slight chance but very rare."

And you're correct generally in humans resistance develops because people feel better, stop taking the meds & keep them in the drug cabinet for 'next time' to save an office visit or anothe copay for meds. Or they are on them for prolonged periods of time & require higher & higher doses to have the same effect on the bacteria/infection. I imagine it would be caused by similar circumstances in felines, but I doubt the 2 days off would be enough. Granted, your vet should not want to keep your kitty on them any longer than absolutely necessary, just to be cautious since she's had issues before & like you said, this one seems safe to her should the need arise.

At least in humans, I don't think the 2 days off would be sufficient to cause issues. Most docs I work with prescribe 'loading doses' of antibiotics for certain, serious infections, meaning if a normal dose is 250mg daily, they'll prescribe 500mg as a one time dose, then decrease to normal dosing & frequency.

Sorry, I know I haven't really helped much but hopefully you get better answers soon...Or have already gotten them (sorry, just now noticed what time you posted) Did you have any luck today?
