Had My Two Kittens Spayed And Neutered

Hi I am new here, looks a lovely site.

I lost my beautiful cat Ziggy to kidney disease after a wonderful 16 years together.

I now have two Tonkinese kittens, the first pedigree cats I have ever owned. They are sister and brother, Lotti and Kensey.

Coming up for 6 months I had them both neutered two days ago.

Kensey you would not think anything had been done, Lotti has been almost her normal self too, both slept a lot yesterday, when they had got home from the ops they were both a bit hyper, ate loads.

Well Lotti today is quiet, was sick this morning but has eaten a little and not been sick again, but she is very quiet.

Can someone tell me if it is normal for them to feel a bit worse the second day post op after being so bright the first day?

Should I be concerned. She doesn't seem to have a fever, her wound looks ok.

I have had cats all my life, but mostly rescue and been neutered before I took them on, also been mostly male cats.

Thanks all.

The surgery is harder on girls than boys. My girls always take a few days to get over it and the boys are usually over it the next day. If she had pain meds that could explain why she felt okay day 1, but is more sore day 2 since the meds have worn off. It sounds like she'll be just fine, she's just recovering.

Thanks very much for that.
They are both fast asleep together, suppose that is better than them rushing about manic like they can be.

I agree that surgery is a little rougher on girls, and each cat reacts differently as well. Just keep an eye on her

In other news, please please please put up some photos of your little ones - I haved LOVED Tonkinese kitties since I was a little girl, and think they have the best of my 2 favourite breeds - Siamese and Burmese

Its rougher on females and especially if they are older. The second day might've been more painful for her because the pain meds might've worn off.

Sounds normal. Don't worry, though, she'll make up for the inactivity.

I second the DEMAND for photos! They sound so cute!

It's completely normal to feel a bit worse on the second day. On the first day they are still a bit woozy from the anesthesia and have pain meds in their system. It's not uncommon for cats to get a bit hyper from opiates that they get during the procedure.
It is of course harder on the females since they have a much more serious procedure. The boys just get a small cut that usually don't even require stitches while the girls actually have their bellies cut open and an organ removed. It is major surgery even though it's routine. Cats are troopers though and bounce back pretty quickly but they are all different. I've had females that you can't even notice that they've had surgery while others sleep for three days.

Thanks very much all, Lotti has been up briefly, would have had play fights with Kensey if I hadn't pulled them apart Had something to eat, jumped up on windows sill etc. and then back to sleep and kensey decided to join her.

I will post some pics up soon of them both.
I can honestly say they are a very special breed of cat, I needed something different to my tabby Ziggy as I felt I could never replace and would be disappointed if a new cat was not the same, as he was so special.

So I looked through different breeds of cats and the Tonk sounded different enough, plus loving and fun.

Here is a pic I just took of them together

Thanks so much, that pic was taken about 10 minutes ago, they washing each other now, that means they will be up when finished eeek!
More stress and watching they don't play too hard.
Roll on when all is normal again.

She has been sick another couple of times tonight, worried again.
Its not at all uncommon for them to vomit a few times the 1st few days. When you feed her give her smaller portions and see if that helps her keep it down. If she continues to be sick call your vets.

Oh, my goodness, they are gorgeous. Is she still on any meds? My girl tossed her cookies on clavamox. But, I hope your vet has an afterhours numbers, or an e-vet available, just for reassurance. I would call - I'm a nervous meowmy!

In the meantime, I wonder if maybe offering her some small amounts of plain cooked chicken breast (I poach mine) but help to settle her tummy a bit. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Thanks so much all, she has been quite bright and I have been trying to stop the rough play. Try that is.

She has had little bits to eat, not been sick again yet.

Again I thank you all, makes a lot of difference when you can ask people who have experienced things like this first hand.

Oh they are gorgeous!!! Sounds as though is all ok, but call your vet if she has any other worrying signs just to be sure

Thank you

Just an update, they seem to be fine now.

Better appetites, Lotti has not been sick again. She was full of beans yesterday, and this morning has wanted fights with big Kensey, but have had to try and stop that as Kensey is quite rough with her, and she is such a little titch

Thanks again all.

I must go and introduce myself, I never saw the part to do that.

Serves me right for thinking I had got away with this spay business very lightly.

Lotti's wound was healing fantastically, just the scab part, nice and pale.

Well she woke me this morning at about 6. Jumped on the bed, I looked at her, then looked again as I saw a big red patch there, was blood.

Part of her wound was open.

I really don't know why, apart from she had decided to give it a good licking, or Kensey for her. I am sure they hadn't been fighting as would have been woken by them.

Well rung the vets when they were open and back she went.

Vet said he doesn't think infection there, put a staple in and put a plastic cone on her, he said she would most probably remove it as was too big for her, the smallest size too.

I thought oh my word! how the heck will I cope with that? When she came home she pulled it off, I put it back on, she pulled and pulled and then it got caught in her mouth, I had to try and quickly untie it as she was in a right pickle.

So off it came and not been back on again.

Phones vet and said to try and watch her then, see how it goes. How the heck I am going to stop her licking at it and the staple, tried that bitter apple and she is not worried about it.

She is asleep right now, and need to try and get antibiotic tablet down her too tonight.

Why can't it be simple for me

Any ideas to stop her licking at it?

Get a tube sock, cut out the toes, and slip her into it, leaving it like a "tube top" around her belly.

Good luck.

I did that with one of my kittens who was chewing out her stitches, and it worked great. Make it as long as possible so that even if it gets bunched up it'll still cover the incision.

Ok thanks for that, will get one tomorrow, but they did the op on the side, not the belly like they seem to in the U.S. So may not cover it so well as is abover her back leg.

I have tried English mustard around it, she was not keen but licked it off, then tried black pepper, definitely not happy with that, but of course comes off easily.

So maybe have to go to plan C, chili powder.

Please don't apply any spices or anything else to the wound. It could burn the wound and potentially cause infection, not to mention it being kind of noxious to the cat.

Oh I have only applied with a cotton bud in the area around the wound, and was careful not get near the it.

She has not touched it after touching with her tongue, so don't think that will harm her.

It is closing nicely again, this morning though she did try and pull at staple, so will see how it goes.
