Is there a place that'd accept open litter?

Hi all.

My mom got me litter, clay-based, to help out (I think is Tidy Cats or something.. yellow tub with blue half-open lid) she said she saw it on sale and thought it was a great deal.

I use World's Best. I decided to try the clay litter anyway. Hey, it was free, lets not let it go to waste.

but OMG, it's SO DUSTY!!! My sinuses are acting up, and the canned food's thats on the shelf above the litter box is covered with dust in just 1 day! Also.. clay clumping power? Horrible. It broke easily into pebbles.

I am not using it anymore. I know clay is bad to begin with, but again, I'd hate to waste. The container is open, some used.. but the 2 shelters I called said they won't accept open litter.

Does anyone know a place or someone on Long Island, NY that could use it? If not for cat litter, but something else?

Sounds like Tidy Cats newer varieties e.g. Tidy Cats Instant Action or Power Blend. I think highly of the original Tidy Cats (in the gold and red packaging - It's the daily litter here due to superb odor control) but newer stuff from Tidy Cats is pretty blah. What you wrote doesn't surprise me
Even so, I'd be willing to take it because luckily my kitties aren't picky

Cat litter can also be used for tires that are stuck in snow (and sometimes mud too I think?)

Yep, it's Tidy Cat's instant Action, lol. It's horrible.

A shelter said they'd call me back. they have to check with their management to see if it's ok to take open litter, if they don't, we'll make an arrangement for you to take it

Not clumping litter! Ugh, what a mess! Only good old fashioned clay gravel type.

Try private rescues. I mean, I don't see the problem with open litter. . .if you buy the screw-top jugs they're already "open". . .they aren't sealed in any way. If you live in a place where this is allowed, put it out on the curb with a "free" sign taped to it. My neighbor did that and I enjoyed some free litter!

So what's the verdict on Tidy Cats -- Immediate Odor Control? Long Lasting Odor Control? Multiple Cat Households? Which do we think slaps down the odor faster?

I haven't smelled anything during the short time I used this litter.. odor control I'd give an A.. but F on everything else!

the shelter's here is willing to accept the litter. great to get it off my hands

Our shelter accepts open bags of food and non-clumping litter.

one of them says they are being careful.. they don't know if some nasty person would mix something dangerous in the litter and harm the cats.

understandable I guess
