Last October, I switched my diabetic Siamese from Hill's Prescription Diet W/D to the new Purina Diabetic Maintenance Formula D/M. Before the switch, she was receiving 3 units of insulin at twelve-hour intervals. After the switch (it took about 3 months for this to happen) we were able to reduce her insulin requirements down to just over 1 unit of insulin at twelve-hour intervals.
It seems that the OLD school of thought was that diabetic felines require less protein, carbs and fat, but more fiber. Purina's study totally debunked that and found that diabetic cats DO require HIGHER protein, but less carbs and fat. Once my girl made the switch, I saw a marked improvement.
Hope this helps - and if anyone needs further info, don't hesitate to contact me.
Unfortunately, I lost my little sugar baby this past week. She was 18, had been ill with diabetes for 5 and a half years, and had recently been diagnosed with cancer. Please wish her a swift journey to the Rainbow Bridge and keep me in your thoughts. She wasn't "just a cat", she was my eccentric daughter who wore only fur, walked on all fours and didn't speak clearly. *weak grin*
