I've got lyme disease

I woke up one morning about two/three weeks ago and all my joints hurt. Not my knuckles so much as the first and middle joints, my wrists, my elbows, my toes, my knees. I snap, crackle and pop like a bowl of rice krispies. My muscles ached like I had the flu. But I wasn't nauseous, had no fever, no lymph swelling or soreness. I went to make some breakfast, and could barely get out of bed. My neck is KILLING me.

I was exhausted. I've had no energy. All I want to do is sleep.

And I cannot open jars. I couldn't open an open jar of mayonnaise LOL, and forget about the childproof pill bottles!

As a few other things crept up, I decided I actually needed to go see a doctor.

I did that this morning. She had lyme disease. She said that even without the telltale rash, it sounds very much like that's what I've got. She saw no point in testing for it - they're not reliable, and if it came up negative, there are so many other tick borne diseases cropping up around here, it could just be a different infection.

I'm not aware of having been bitten by a tick, but I've had plenty of them on me. Not embedded - but crawling on me. We're in a very rural area with a lot of deer and other wildlife, and I've been trapping feral cats.

So I'm on doxycycline for a month. Hopefully this will help - or we have to start searching for other answers.

Well. That's seriously not nice!! Glad you had it seen to, and have meds. Hope they're effective and you're feeling better very soon!

oh Laurie im so sorry from what ive heard about Lymes its rather managable, is your doctor fully sure? I think i'd want to test just incase

but lots of and

Oh, no, Laurie. I'm so sorry to hear this. But it's so good you went to a doctor, and she pretty much knew what it was. I've known of people who have gone for a long time without it being diagnosed, because it kept being mis-diagnosed.

I'm betting the doxycycline will take care of it. Many vibes that you start feeling better!!!

If we had insurance, she'd do the testing, but she was sensitive to the fact that we don't. However given the clinical signs and her familiarity with the disease (it's pretty common out here), she felt comfortable treating for it. If I don't feel better after the month, then we have to dish out money for testing.

Oh yeah - I have some serious "brain fuzz" starting too. I'm losing words... the funniest so far was the other day when I couldn't remember "dental floss," and I had to ask Gary where the "string for your teeth" is.

Gary's got short term memory problems because of his health issues, and he loses words too... our conversations are getting quite interesting. We'd probably be killer at charades these days.

And he put his back out badly a few days ago. We went to do laundry two days ago, and between his hobbling and my inability to grip anything, we could probably charge admittance for a comedy routine.

Oh Laurie...sorry about that.
Hope you feel better.

Oh, that's no good! I really hope that the meds help and get you back to normal in a month though. Joint pain is no fun. Brain fog is no fun either. But, as you said, it does help to find the humor in it... I hope you and Gary can keep your spirits up!

And don't put the lid on the mayo on too tight!!
Augh! Get well soon! Let Gary open the jars for you!
You guys sure don't need any more problems! I sure hope you'll be okay and be able to treat whatever's ailing you!
Aww... I'm glad you got it diagnosed. I've also heard that it is often missed or mis-diagnosed. Hope the meds work!!!
Oh crap Laurie!! That really sucks!!! I hope the meds manage it. I hate hearing this--really!!

Thank you again (and again!) !!!

It does explain why Billy's been sleeping ON MY BACK. It's not helping, I don't think.

(He takes up my entire back! I wish he'd hurry up and lose more weight!). It is really sweet though... he does take up my entire back, and uses my head as a pillow.

My dad has had lymes disease two or three times already. He usually gets the bulls eye rash though. And knows the other systems for the doc puts him on anti-biotics for a couple of weeks and it clears up.

Get well vibes too you!

Sending vibes that the antibiotic will clear this up. Get well soon, Laurie!

Since no testing was done, I hope this isn't the start of something else (and possibly autoimmune in nature - you have enough stress in your life to trigger something). The problem is that those who have/had lyme disease see it in everyone around them.

As for testing, it's not true that it can't be tested for. It's just that the ELISA test, as it is with most diseases it's used for, has a high failure rate. Western blot can test for it. Ironically the CDC only accepts info from ELISA positive cases.

If I were you, I'd make a list of diseases in your family.

I truly hope the doctor is very much wrong. If you do have it there's no telling how long you've had it without more testing, and even if you recently got it the doxy might not work. Chronic lyme's is bad - a serious disease that does not truly ever go away.

O that is awful. But you sure keep a sense of humor! I was laughing. But I sure hope you get better soon. It is so hard when you just hurt all over...know that well. We have lots of deer here too and my husband spends lots of time in the woods cutting wood. It is always something you have to think about.

Take good care both of you. I hope you come through the pain alright. Is there anything that can get rid of the pain...does tylenol or something help?

I had lyme disease a couple of years ago and at first they put me on the wrong antibiotic. When the symptoms didn't clear and I went back to a different doctor, they were shocked that they didn't put me on doxycyline - that is the antibiotic of choice for the disease. A few weeks of the doxy and I was better.

I had the test run and it didn't test positive for lyme, but I had all the symptoms (including the bulls eyed rash) so they assumed that I had it. The test did show that I had (at some point in my life) Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, so that gave them the conclusion that I had been bitten by a tick. That was a bit scary, since the death rate from that disease is about 15% without treatment. It's common to treat for the disease without a positive test.

Sending healing vibes your way. Take care of yourself for the next few weeks so your body's stress level goes down while you heal. Lyme can cause permanent damage if you don't knock it out.
