The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (U.S. Superbowl of dog shows from Madison Square Garden in New York City) is on TV now. It's on cable channel CNBC for the 2nd and 3rd hours. It's on tonight and tomorrow night - the first hour each night is on USA channel (3 hours each night).

I'm not even a dog person, but I always think it is the best show on TV all year. Best sport show, at least.

It's a very happy event.

awesome! I will probably catch tomorrows! I think Garys sister and her boyfriend were going to go to it since they are in NYC this week!

The breeder of one of our females (that lives with my friend) is at Westminster this year showing one of her dogs. If you get to see the hounds, check out Serenity, a miniature longhaired dachshund.

I wish we got it here, but we don't

I love watching the dog shows, I've never been to 1. I do have a neighbor who breeds show dogs, has 1 that's won a few competitions.

The only ones on TV are the finalists in each breed. So they are literally the top dogs. Most have won best of their breed at many shows before getting to Westminster.

The last contest, held at the end tonight, is where the best of each category (working, toy, hound, ect. ) compete for "Best in Show."

I can't watch all 6 hours of it, but I'll catch some more of it tonight.

Ooh. I love the Westminster dog show! Thanks for the heads up. I completely forgot about it! I wonder if it'll still be on at around 9 PM tonight, when I'll be getting home. I'll check on it.

I always pull for a dachshund.
Would love to see a dachshund make it into the finals. Love those dogs!!!

It's on until 10 p.m. tonight where I am - Central Standard Time.

However, the hounds were the first category that competed last night. A Scottish Deerhound won.

I always almost forget about it too each year. It's always this week though.

I watched some of it last night, and I'm looking forward to the best in show tonight. I loved the Scottish Deerhound winning! That's certainly not a breed you hear much about. And of course those beagles are so darn cute. They had a stunning wolfhound there too, just gorgeous.

I was soooo excited a few years ago when a Puli made finals (that is a Hungarian Sheepdog). They are black, smaller than an Old English Sheepdog, and their fur is worn in mats, or cords.

We used to have one. Actually, we've had 2. They are REALLY smart!

Oh, it's a Scottish Deerhound! I'll correct my post above. At home I have a dog breed reference book, but I didn't have it with me when I posted. I bought it because I became so fascinated with all the different kinds of dogs, from watching this dog show over the last 20 years. Other dog shows I've tried to watch just don't compare.

Of course, I support getting dogs from shelters, purebred, or not. The only dog I ever had myself (though I've been very involved with a couple others who belonged to other people) was an Old English Sheep Dog that I got at a shelter. No papers, of course, but that's what he was.

I love dogs, but they are too much work for me. I stay away from them at the shelter where I volunteer. They're too much temptation.

I hadn't watched any of it yet but I saw where the Shar Pei made it to the final round for the first time. It's nice to see some of the breeds that hadn't made it this far before coming into their own.

Great finish with the Scottish Deerhound winning Best in Show, first time for that breed in the 135 years. Hickory is retiring now, after all his personal appearances in the next few weeks, to go home and father puppies. HE won a lot in his first 5 years, but now he has nowhere to go in the dog show world. He reached the top.

This year I wouldn't have minded if any of the BinS finalists had won. They were all beautiful dogs. Some years I don't think so. Some years I have a strong favorite. But this year I didn't. I thought the Italian judge was very interesting and seemed the consummate pro. I liked his speech.

All in all, a great year for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show!

My newspaper says Hickory is a "he." I corrected my post.

I haven't seen that movie, but I heard it is funny. I should get it from Netflix.

Yeah I couldn't help thinking of "Best in Show" too. It's a funny film.

I was stoked that Hickory won! Such a stunning dog. And the Italian judge did seem like such a professional, and stylish too.

I was going to say, "I saw it one year when there was a bloodhound"...and then realized it was in the movie!
