Hi Guys

I have a question about feeding my cat wet food. She had a little bit of a cold last week ( that has pretty much cleared up ) so we got her some canned food in addition to her dry food but have noticed that shes not drinking as much water? is this normal or not? she has been getting the canned food once a day as well as eating her dry food.

Any thoughts would be great

Canned food, otherwise known as WET food, contains a ton of water. In nature, cats get a vast majority of their water through their food. It is unnaturl for them to eat dry food, which is why they consume a lot more water on all-dry than on wet and dry or full wet.

Yup, totally normal. As rad said, cats normally get most of their moisture from their food (which is why dry food can be problematic, especially for cats with a low thirst drive) so basically your cat doesn't need to drink as much standalone water when on a canned diet, she's not as dehydrated now.

Indeed, totally normal, KitKat! Cats on kibble are often chronically dehydrated, just one of the many reasons wet food is so much healthier for cats than dry.

cat's prey is normally 70-75% water

canned food will help your cat get more of its water needs

I really like what Lisa A. Pierson, DVM has to say about feeding your cat, maybe you'd like to check out her web site: http://www.catinfo.org/

another web page: http://www.suite101.com/content/choo...at-food-a15368

talks about dry food giving only 8% moisture - that's why it's so important to keep a good/fresh supply of water available

Yes, it is true! I have noticed less drinking of water just slightly since switching to 3/4 wet and 1/4 dry. Presley is so cute when he eats, he has to have a water bowl right next to his dish when he eats. He goes from the food dish to the water dish to take a few slurps and then back to his dish to eat some more and then back to the water for a few slurps, etc., etc. I have never had a cat do that ever. He does like his wet food and water together

As others have said... definitely normal. But my guys drink a fair amount of water anyway... they get about 1/3 wet and 2/3 dry for daily caloric load.
