Do rescue sites help out with cost if you are going to adopt the kitty? I imagine this one will need alot of medical attention, more than I can afford right now. I can certainly do a neuter but the ears...

I do wonder why he only comes around at night.
Sounds like you are right around the corner from me. No rescue sites around here that i know of help with vet bills. Are you in Geauga County? Some other surrounding counties have TNR programs and the mobile pet fix... He most likely sleeps all day and comes out at night to eat and hunt for females and his ears are probably just torn up and blood crusted from fighting with other cats..

They look frost-bitten. The black on there is tell-tale.

If untreated, the 3rd & 4th degree frostbitten areas will fall off:

In fact - every link I'm reading says the blackened skin from frostbite will fall off if untreated for some time.

The problem is the frostbitten areas that aren't blackened and falling off.

The worst case i ever saw was a total black ear and yes it did fall off.. the pic does not look like a total case of frostbite that needs immediate vet care. I would be more worried about getting the cat fixed and homed. tom cats always get their ears torn up.... peroxide (very carefully) is what i use...

I was just addressing this. The picture looks like frostbite, not scabs.

You must have missed what the op said > It looks like the black parts of his ears have been taken off so I am hoping his "owners" took him to the vet.

I doubt anyone would take a tom cat to the vet if they dont care enough to fix him. scabs do fall off and leave scars with no fur which I can see in the pic. dried crusted blood can appear black even in the warm weather...

Orange kitty has been around my house for almost two years. I have treated him for fight wounds and this was not like them.

He does not belong to the neighbors I thought he did, so he will be free for me to adopt when I can get him neutered.

I just hope I can introduce them with no issues. He is HUGE. I mean twice the size of my indoor kitties. He is friends with Zoh, my indoor kitty who hunts outside.

He is so going to be pissed when I put him in the carrier. We are having bad weather here and he is not here for his warm milk.

for catching him soon.

Good luck, Zohdee!!! Big Orange Kitty needs an angel!

you could try getting him in a carrier by putting can cat food in there.. then you can just close the door and latch it quick. or if you can pet him? grab him by the scruff of the neck and put him in the cage hind legs first.. its much easier if the cage door is facing the sky...

I found a very low cost place to get him neutered:

http://www.petfixnortheastohio.org/index.htm

He has to belong to someone because he is not all that interested in food, just milk. He is heavy..with good muscle tone. Other than his ears, he appears to be well fed. Do ferals exhibit this?

It is so hard to get him to the vet. I have only been getting one day off work and he is not around the night before.

He was here the other night and all the black is gone but so is part of his ear. He let me pick him up and snuggle him...he purred for me.

I do have a feral tomcat I am trying to trap right now. He too is very fat and well muscled, but is very feral and very smart. I think he is a bit older and has been around the block a time or two. I believe he is the daddy to all the kittens I trapped in December. So they can still be unowned and look pretty fat and healthy.

It sounds like you should be able to get him to the vet quite easily and he does sound tame. So at one point or another, he was someone's pet. Good luck and thank you for getting him neutered

I am off today and he wasn't around last night.

I sleep weird. I had my head at the foot of the bed so I can see the window and I have been looking for him. I will be asleep and I will wake up and he is in my window.

I will, mark my words, get him to the vet at some point.

I just can't bring him in and risk disease.

Orange Kitty has been in my thoughts the last couple of days. Do you still see him most nights? Do you feed him and, if so, does he eat?

His frequency has dropped as of late.

And yes, every time he is in my window he gets food and milk.

zohdee -- don't feed him cow's milk. Most all cats are lactose intolerant. A tiny bid may not give them digestive upset, but it's possible. More than that and it's likely they will get diarrhea.
