Dear friends,

This is my first post here and i would like to say hi to all.

I had a query about one of my kittens. here is my story...

my neighbor got a cat first, Persian - was sick from day one with loose motion and passing blood in motion and has always been sick with some problem or another. Recently diagnosed with FIP and passes away in a horrible state a couple of days earlier.

Soon after i bought my first kitten : a male Persian-angoran mix who is now 7 months old. He is very healthy and has grown like a full cat already. He is very active and naughty all the time breaking stuff around the house. He loves to play and be the man of the house. He played with my neighbors cat only once.

When he was three months old i felt sorry for him and got a pure Persian female kitten who is now 8 months old. She was very healthy when i got her and was much healthier and fatter than the boy(i think she had a slight weight more than required. a lil wee bit).
Recently in maybe the last month i noticed that the boy is growing and growing really big and the girl has some what reduced weight and her appetite has also gone down. Not a big reduction in weight but a lil bit.
She has been in my neighbors cats house (who died due to FIP) thought they never really came on contact with each other they were in the same room for like maybe maximum of 15 minutes each time and maybe 5 times overall. I dont think they ever directly brushed each other but i do remember them smelling each other.) Neither did they ever eat from the same bowl or crapped in the same litter.

I am worried about her loss of appetite and loss of weight although both are not drastic. She still eats a lot when she is hungry but not when i put the food out immediately but after some while. She is active playing the whole morning and evening and having a good 4 hours nap in the afternoon(is this normal). She does not have loose motion or any other symptoms related to FIP.

Can someone tell me:

1- why is my 7 month old male cat bigger than my 8 month old female?
2- does a Persian angoran mix grow bigger than a Persian?
3- what should be the approximate weight of my 8 month old Persian angoran kitten?
4- Could she possibly have FIP? is it easily contagious?
5- do i to take her to the doc immediately?

I can really afford expensive food and i know a lot of people are going to advice on this but please keep in mind my budget. i just started my first job 4 months back.

I feed them wet and dry food mix three times a day. The wet food is whiskas chicken kitten and the biscuits are Royal Canin. Once a week i feed them royal canin wet food after their cleanup. i also give them one piece of plain chicken salami as a treat per day. i dont feed them any human food.

My girl cat is used to this and used to have a lot of it before. I have tried to give them the worm tablet but it failed. I think hardly any amount went in.

I will take her to the vet soon but please also advice me here as well. I am sorry for typing so much and bothering you guys but i love my kittens so dam much.

Please help me

Oh and when i got my female kitten home she was vaccinated even before she ever met the FIP cat. although it was not FIP vaccination(i think). And i got her when she was 4 months old and got both my kitten from a family (not involved in breeding) but having just two house cats like me. So they aint from the shelter and neither are they from breeders.

1- why is my 7 month old male cat bigger than my 8 month old female? Males sometimes are bigger than females. Midnight (5 months) is bigger than Luna (8 months) and longer than her to.
2- does a Persian angoran mix grow bigger than a Persian? I don't know anything about Persians. There is a breeder's corner section here. You might find people who know a lot about Persians in there who could answer this questions.
3- what should be the approximate weight of my 8 month old Persian angoran kitten? Again I don't know anything about Persians.
4- Could she possibly have FIP? is it easily contagious? I don't know how contagious it is. You could always just call your vet and ask.
5- do i to take her to the doc immediately? If she isn't eating, and losing weight, you really should take her to the vet. It's very important a cat eats. She may not have FIP, she may have something else.

Girls are smaller than boys... Her appetite might be slowing down as she is getting past kittenhood. Sounds like she is eating and doesn't have any other symptoms though... But if she is losing weight, I would be concerned about other problems. I would take her to the vet for peace of mind.

FIP is not contagious, the coronavirus is. Whether it then mutates into FIP no one can say. You can test for coronavirus, but lots of cats have it and it never turns into FIP.

Males are bigger than females, you are also comparing a purebred with a mix breed.

If you have any concerns at all please get your cat to a vet.

Are they de-sexed? If not, at that age she's most likely pregnant and should see the vet for prenatal care. . .if they are fixed, it might be that she's just maturing and losing her kitten appetite. It is normal for her to be smaller than the male (males cats are usually much larger than females), but losing weight isn't really normal. If you have any cause to be concerned about her health, you should get her to the vet right away. For now, it might be worth a (non-emergency) visit to the vet for some high-quality de-wormer. The OTC de-wormers aren't usually very effective.

in a constant state of chaos (PA)
female cats are usually smaller than males. we have a persian cross and he is a sizable cat (he's 16 pounds, and he is only a little overweight)

the feline coronavirus, which causes FIP is very contagious. most cats who have been in a cattery or a multi-cat household with more than 5 cats have been exposed to the feline coronavirus. it is very common. FIP itself is not contagious. the main theory on FIP (it seems, at least at the moment) is that it is stress that causes the coronavirus to mutate into FIP. limit the stressors your cat is exposed to if you want to minimize your chances of your cat developing FIP. try not to subject them to more than one major stressor at a time and feed your cats high quality foods.

we lost one of our cats to the dry form of FIP last year, it was horrible. his main symptoms were weight loss, lethargy and he ran a high fever. he was never as active as his brother, he spent most of the 7 months that we had him snuggled up on my lap.
