Kattie is sneezing

Hi all,

My 6 yo female has just started sneezing more frequently the last few days. She is acting fine. Same energy level, eating like a horse, peeing and pooping and all that. She doesn't have a fever and her eyes and nose aren't runny like a typical uri. I am a vet tech and all, but moved to a new state and currently am not working. I have treated her before at my work for an Uri, but she was much sicker, congested runny eyes and nose and a fever. She looked awful then. This is different, a dry sneeze, but much more frequent than the norm. She doesn't go outside, so I know there is no foreign body, so I am at a loss. I have clavamox that I grabbed for my emergency first aid kit before I left work, but I don't want to give it unless neccessary. I would take her to a vet to confirm if she needed it and then give it rather than buy it from the vet. Also she has had a bad reaction to baytril in the past so we won't go there.
I do have pet insurance but I don't think that a uri will even hit the deductible so I probably won't do a claim unless it went higher. I am just debating whether to wait it out or taker her in. The other thing that I worry about is that I will be taking her with me at Christmas about an hour away to my parents for a few days. She is familiar with their house and all because we stayed there for a few months while getting situated up here, but still the car ride and new house will be stress if she isn't healthy.
Just looking for opinions, also, my other cat isn't showing any signs, but doesn't mean that he won't. The other thing that I was thinking is that we moved into a pet friendly apartment complex and I see that a lot of owners have cats and I know URI's can travel on the wind. She is vaccinated but still...
Suggestions will be greatly appreciated,

Becky and Kattie

It could be an allergy of some sort. Or it might be asthma. You could try switching off a clay litter, if that's what you use, to a dust free and see if that helps.

I was wondering if you have a new litter, air freshener, laundry or other kind of soap, dryer sheet, lotion, perfume, or other such "smelly" thing? If she is only sneezing & not showing any other signs/symptoms of URI, I would be more inclined to wonder at this point in time if she isn't sneezing because of something else. Obviously if she develops other signs of a URI that would be different. Cats have very sensitive noses, she may be reacting to something that smell too strongly for her.

Nothing of that sorts has really changed, but I just checked on her and her eyes are starting to get runny and her nose is too. She also seems warm and starting to not feel as good , so I guess we will be off to the vet as this does look likethe beginning of a uri.

Is your cat sneezing every where in the house, or just in 1 area. It could be something new in the area she's allergic to. Even something in a shopping bag. Once my mother bought something, she left it in the shopping bag on the floor. Lynxx ran over thinking it was for him like he always did. Only every time he looked into the bag he sneezed, he was allergic to whatever it was my mother bought.

If the weather's changed, it could just be seasonal allergies. I get that with my kitties, especially this time of year.

well Kattie went to the vet yesterday. I found an awesome practice not too far from where I live. The doctor was very nice and reminded me of my old boss. Well he looked her over and pretty much she has all the classic signs of an upper respiratory infection. Her lungs and heart sound great and he said she was in excellent health otherwise. He said that it could be other things, like allergies, even a tumor in the nasal passages but that it was highly unlikely. It's funny, because being a vet tech, I ran through the exact same differential diagnosis too Anyways, he said that it was ok to give the clavamox that I had bought from my work to prevent any secondary bacterial infections. Hopefully that will take care of it. Then when I got her home, Oscar, my other cat came out and started sneezing like 5 times. Guess it isn't allergies lol. He is going to be put on the antibiotics if it continues, but maybe his body can fight it off on his own.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm taking Rula to the vet in about an hour for the same EXACT reason. She just started sneezing like once-twice an hour. It seems only to be when she's sniffing something. I checked her eyes, nose--no mucus or discharge and she's otherwise fine.

Hope Kattie is feeling better soon!
