Oh my gosh I am in shock, need major vibes please-*quite disturbing*

I don't know where to begin, I am in shock, we went out last night to my mother in laws 50th suprise birthday party and it was a lovely night, we didn't get in till late and crashed out as soon as we got in. The next thing I knew it was this morning and someone was hammering on our door,John went down and the next thing I heard was my neighbour and then something about eye hanging out. I rushed downstairs and she told me that the cat had come in with her eye literally hanging out, she had come to borrow our cat basket to take her to the emergency vets as she lent hers to her sister the previous week.
I've just seen her hubby, she has had to go to work and the vet is operating, apparently he thinks she has been shot!!I am in shock, who in their right mind would do this to a cat?He said that she came in this morning and just sat on the settee and he looked at her and saw her eye was hanging out and she was pouring with blood, he said he had to look twice and then he felt so sick, of course phoned the emergency vets straight away. He said the vet could see an entry wound so it coincides with her being shot, I don't know anymore apart from that it is very serious and she may not make it, the vet couldn't believe she was still alive as he has never seen such a serious injury.
Ok we all know the dangers of letting our cats outside but no one ever, ever would imagine this, where we live its so quiet and never any trouble. I am so upset and also it puts me in a position, as some of you may know I've been having huge problems with Harvey and have decided to let him out, what the heck do I do now? I don't want him out at all now. Also I want to make other people round here aware of this, they need to know, I don't know if the vet will contact the RSPCA?I told next door to phone the local paper, its sick, its just disgusting but at the minute my thoughts and prayers are with Izzy and I hope she makes it.By the way I wasn't sure where to post this so if it needs moving please do and I'm sorry.xx

That's horrible! Mega for Izzy. If it turns out to be a gunshot, your neighbors/the vet should definitely contact the police as well as the RSPCA.

Can you walk Harvey outside on a lead? It's not that difficult to harness-train a cat.

Thanks, someone needs to be informed but my neighbours are just concentrating on Izzy at the moment, her hubby was in major shock, he said he feels ill, they are waiting for the vet to phone.
As for Harvey I don't think I would be able to walk him on a harness, I have a whole thread on his behaviour and my decision to let him out wasn't taken lightly, what gets me is that Izzy was obviously shot this morning as she had been in at night and they let her out when Ian took Penny to work and then she came in two hours later.x

Amazing that the cat got back home! There has always been cruelty to animals, and I think it's actually gotten a lot better, but there are still enough to worry about that we haven't let a cat outdoors in 37 years.

Sorry to hear about that. It's definitely upsetting that's for sure.

Do they know for certian that the cat was shot? the reason I am asking is 'cause when I worked for a Vet the most usual reason for a cat or dog to have an eyeball hanging out is being whacked on the back of the head by something, often a glancing blow by automobile will do this. Some small dog breeds with large eyes just have their eyeballs pop out for no reason at all.

If it was a gunshot I'd definitely be keeping the furkids inside...

We've just had a policeman round, the vets have informed them, yes she has definetely been shot, still in surery as far as I know, I will go and see Penny when she gets home from work. I am glad that the police are taking this very seriously, the policeman said the more he goes door to door, the more he is getting angry as he has a cat, it will be in the paper and possibly the local news and he is going to get some posters put up. He said the chances of finding the culprit are slim but he will do his best, one neighbour has told him she heard rifle shots being fired this morning. I am fuming, totally. x

MY neighbour said as soon as the vet examined her he knew it was a gun shot because there was an entry wound and it was the way the eye was detatched. Oh don't worry my babies will be inside, theres only Harvey that goes outside but I will have to re-think my whole strategy for dealing with his behaviour, theres no way I'm riskin it.x

Have you looked into any outdoor cat enclosures? I'm sorry that I missed your original thread about this. You may have already addressed this, but if you own your own home, it's a great option. Depending on your budget, these enclosures and/or cat fences can be quite nice. Most important, they would keep your cat safe. I can guide you toward some brands, if you'd like. Our family did this research to help my mom with her Maine Coon, Bailey. (Turns out, Bailey is perfectly happy in a harness and leash.)

Apparently she just came in and sat on the sofa, Ian had to look twice befoe realising, cats are amazing creatures. I'm just in shock its just terrible, its quite a close knit community round here so I think all cats will be inside after this, the policeman dealin with it is really good and he's going down every avenue possible to find who has done it. x

Thanks, thats a good option. My main concern is Harvey, I have struggled loads to come to the decision to let him out because of his behaviour and I finally feel I'm gettin somewhere with him and then this. At the minute I just want him in and will have to see how it goes. Next door I don't think will ever let their cats out again.x

I can understand why you are so upset - that's a shock to anyone! But also that is the risk when you let your pets outside unsupervised. All it takes is one person tired of the cat in their yard or whatever reason and decides to shoot it.

I have no problem with supervised outside time - but I have a problem when people just open the door and let the pet outside not knowing where it goes, if it will come home and if it will come home unhurt.

I suggest that if your cat wants outside time you either:

1. Train to a harness/leash; or
2. Build/buy a sturdy cat enclosure where the cat can sit outside in safety and not be roaming who knows where.

Thers only Harvey who goes outside unsepervised out of my cats, I made this decision after my long thread on his behaviour and I had tried everything else that people had suggested. I don't feel safe to let mine out either way now and I will have to work something else out with Harvey. I have a feeling once word ets round, nobody will feel safe letting their cats out around here.I just want to know how Izzy is.x

Sending up prayers for the kitty and that the "person" and I use that word lightly is caught and punished severely.

Many for Izzy!

I don't let my cats out anymore - I grew up with cats we let outside in the morning and they'd come in in the afternoon or evening, with no problem. We did that with Monte and Katina because both Rob and I grew up with the indoor/outdoor kitties, but then Monte was hit by a car. So Nero, Neko, and Hoshi are indoors only unless on a harness, and Nero is the only one I can squish into a harness. Hoshi runs out the back door if it opens, but stops at the bottom of the porch steps to eat grass, doesn't go anywhere else. Neko seems uninterested. Katina is still let outside by my in-laws, but she barely goes anywhere, and the neighbors are all pet-friendly.

I want to get my three a cat enclosure for Xmas this year, I think they'd enjoy "freedom" outside, without a harness and leash.

This is a horrible thing to have happened, please let us know how the kitty is, I hope she makes it thru the surgery and hopefully doesn't lose her eye, the main thing is that she lives as she can live with one eye.

I hope they catch the bum who did this, this is just one reason I hate some humans so much.

I have never let my cats outside and I never will. My next door neighbor lets her cats out all the time, so far they always come home and are ok but I just wouldn't feel comfortable letting Autumn out.

Sending special for this kitty.

How awful. for Kitty
Bleh that is horrible and I actually feel ill thinking about it.

There have been a lot of cats killed/tortured in my city as of late - moreso since a couple of years ago some kids microwaved their neighbors cat - then left a note about how it screamed before it exploded etc - the neighbors were on holidays and the kids went in their house to do this. The kids got away with it cuz "kids will be kids"... and since then cats have really been getting tortured here. So many horrifying stories.

I could never let my cats outside.
I have friends that do and we fight about it a lot actually - recently his cat got hit by a car and he told me "before you gloat, the second he is healed he will be let back out - cuz he likes it". UGH.

He wont even get an enclosure cuz "it likes to run free" (sigh)

My heart breaks for all these cats who are met with such horrible treatment.

Oh Ruthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for kitty!

I know money's tight, and I know this poses some REALLY difficult decisions for you. If I remember correctly, your backyard has a fence? Is Harvey able to leave your backyard because of openings in the fence or an ability to scale the fence?

There are low-cost options to being able to string a "cat proof" way to prevent him from getting over the fence.

Please let us know so we can help make it safe for Harvey to go outside and chase his bugs!

And more for kitty. I know it'll be difficult, but I REALLY hope there was a witness and this horrible person is caught and prosecuted!

I live in a quiet area but i wouldn't trust anyone. If i were to live in a place where Nat (Whitecatlover) lived where there were hardly any houses i might think differently, but as long as theres housing estates no way.

I truly hope the cat is ok, but i hope it's owners think twice about it going out now

Oh I really hope that the kitty comes out of surgery ok

What sick kind of could do such a thing I hope they catch them.

Theres just a gap into next doors grden and then they have a wrought iron gate so and thats where I assume Izzy and their other cats get out. I've had to put Harvey out for half an hour today, he attacked Fudge,I watched him though and he's in now.Grrr, its made me so mad, I went to Pennys a bit ago and thank God Izzy has made it through the surgery, she has had to have her eye removed though and she's on alot of painkillers, she will possibly be home in a couple of days depending on how she is. Penny said she let her out at 8.45am and then she came babk in at 10am so in the space of that short time and in broad dayliht some *@n*@r did this. There will be a press release the police have said, I have also told Penny to contact The Sun, national newspaper as they may offer a reward for someone shopping the culprit like they did with that cow that put the kitty in the bin.
No matter what whether she let her cats out or not, if it wasn't Izzy it could have been a child, they obviously didn't care a less about anybody. Penny said the police have an inkling as to whom it may have been as there has been trouble with an air rifle before but of course you cannot go round accusing. I really like the Policeman who is dealing with this, he is our local beat bobby and a major cat lover which helps so much and I am sure he will not rest until he finds out who has done it.x

Air rifle? This may be the work of a local teen boy. If they do find the perpetrator, and he does turn out to be a young boy, does the UK permit a civil suit against the parents of the boy? Your friend Penny should be compensated for the vet bill.

awwwww no mega for Izzy!!

i hope they catch whoever did this!!!!!!!

As far as I know teenagers are tried in court the same as adults and can be given jail terms in young offenders institutes. The vets bill so far I know is £700, money that they were saving for IVF but they aren't worried, just angry.x
post #27 of 77
There are some sick and irresponsible people out there. But somehow you don't expect it in the UK. Here hunters shoot cats, and mine are indoors during hte hunting season (now). It has to be a boy with an air rifle or something like that. Good vibes for everyone concerned.

I just read your thread Ruthy--I am SO SORRY and APPALLED that this has happened. I hope sweet little Izzy makes it. Are these the neighbors that watched your animals while you were on vacation? Gosh, they have had terrible luck lately--I hope they don't lose Izzy'
I pray there isn't anyone out there shooting cats!!! Maybe you and your neighbors can start a neighborhood watch group or something. It helps cut crime down inn my neighborhood. Gosh, mega vibes to them and to you too because I know this is tearing you up. :heart 3:

And bless their hearts for using the IVF money to get Izzy help. I'm glad you have a good policeman where you live. I hope he's a cat lover!!!

Thanks hun, yes it seems like its their turn for bad luck at the minute. I'm so scared now though for Harvey, I daren't let him out but he's causing me alot of stress, he's been that bad but I'd rather have the stress than lose him. The policeman is lovely, he said about doing a press release so I will think that will happen tomorrow, I doubt anyone will come forward though. The policeman seems very good and he has got a cat and he said it had upset him very much aswell as angered him, he's been doing door to door all day which is fab.Penny said that Izzy will be ok but obviously poor baby has lost her eye and its going to be really hard for her, I am just so angry and upset, the poor baby, so glad that she made it home although she must have been in teriffic pain, Penny said even the veterinary nurse was shocked at the state of her. I don't know what else can be done about this, I really think a national newspaper should be contacted.x
