It Just Doesn't End

Mist is 14.5 years old. She's a diabetic who was first on glipizide, now controlled with diet. Osteoarthritic, taking cosequin 4X week.

Her last vet check visit was on October 5, all was good, glucose on the high side but vet's new puppy was yapping and dashing around.

She is now drinking lots of water and consequently peeing copiously. BTW - I measure out a cup of water, pour into water bowl. 24 hours later I pour remaining water back into measuring cup and note consumption. Mist is drinking 1/2 to 2/3 cup H2O in 24 hours, which is a huge amount for a cat.

Vet back from a week's clinic on Indian reservation in Arizona. Took Mist in today for senior panel. The lab will check glucose, thyroid, and kidney function.

I am hoping for a flareup of diabetes as it was easily managed.

Her brother Fog was euthanized on Oct 11. I really, really would have liked more of a break before dealing with this.

Please, sympathy and good vibes for us and our sweet cat.

P.S. Her weight is unchanged at 8.6 pounds.

Oh that is tough. Lets hope it is the diabetes. I have a diabetic that was controlled for a while with diet, but eventually had to start on the insulin. He is doing very well.

Many prayers and vibes for you and Mist.

I'm hoping Mist is going to be alright. I'll be thinking about both of you.

After you just lost Fog, it's just too much!

Called the vet office this morning. Mist's glucose is somewhat high at 191 (but it is always difficult to gauge accuracy since cats get stressed / glucose goes up just going to the vet.) Other values are "a little high" - her amylase is a little up, one liver value is a little up, etc but nothing that my vet sees as out of line for a 14.5 year old senior cat.

Such relief! I was sure it would be her kidneys or something equally horrible.

So she'll go back on glipizide which is what she started on when diabetes was first diagnosed. That gave her pancreas a rest, and she lost some weight on a high protein / low carb diet (what my vet calls the "Catkins" diet) - two 3.5 ounce cans / day in 4 portions.

We had a "honeymoon" - no glipizide - for over 6 months. If she's back on glipizide which she happily eats in a little bit of her wet food then I can deal with this.

I'm sure all the good vibes had something to do with this positive outcome, if only getting me through a tense 24 hours until I heard the results. Thank you for all the kind thoughts and good wishes.

What a relief! So glad it's treatable with medication.

I went to the vet's today and picked up some glipizide. Mist will take 2.5 mg once a day, and we'll recheck her glucose levels in 2 months. Rather than a whole bottle of 100 pills I asked for just 35 - that will cover the 2 months plus a few days in case I don't get an appointment precisely 60 days from now.

She came off glipizide in November 2009 so that's almost a whole year. Pretty good, seems to me.

Mist is such a good girl. Just push the 1/2 pill into a little wet food and she nomms it down then looks up and meows to ask "Where's the rest of my dinner?"

Last night I was so concerned and worried. I feel so much better tonight, knowing all is well.
