OK - calling all moms and grand-moms (and dads) who have experience with baby monitors. I want to get one to help me keep tabs on my elderly mom at night after she goes to bed. That way, I can hear if she falls or calls for me and needs help, etc.

Also, looking at elevated toilet seats. Looking at some of them, from what I read .... they are stable front to back but not side to side. I don't want her tipping and falling. Looking at getting something like the item below.
Anyone with any experience in this area.... feel free to chime in!

I worked many years as a home health occupational therapist. Ideally, the "tall boy" toilet is best, and then attach the bars as shown in the photo. You can find stable attachable toilet elevations, and unless your mom is very heavy or very weak and leans on things for support a great deal, she should be fine.

Does your mom have physical limitations, cognitive/mental ones, or both? Feel free to PM me with specific questions any time. It will help me feel useful. LOL

Take care,

Cally

I used a basic room to room intercoms( cheaper an easier than most monitors)... ours had a call button , hold and talk... On hold all rooms could hear what was going on in that room... nice thing was portablitly... as they just needed to plug in...

If you need to be allerted if your mom gets out of bed, you could get an angel care monitor, you put it under the mattress and it beeps if it doesnt feel movement

I was thinking about a "bed alarm" of some sort.

All of these are GREAT suggestions.
Knew you guys would have wonderful input.

Mom is 86 -frail and very small - about 4' 8".... and she does need help getting off the toity. She is recovering from a mild heart attack.... also may be undergoing some major heart surgery. Getting eval'd at Cleveland Clinic later this month.

The bars should be like the ones in your picture for stability.
Right, thinking about combining a riser like the one you posted along with the mounted bars for stability, rather than the seat that just bolts on and has handles on it. I don't think that is safe for her.

I like the "push to talk" function, but I am not sure I can get her to do that. She still has trouble with the Cable remote control!
And the newer phones.

Cally - I may take you up on your offer. Mom has had OT in the past and it has helped, along with PT.

All I can say is that I hate my baby monitor!! So my advice is get a good one! It is worth the money. They have video ones that are very reasonable now too. I went for a cheaper monitor. It's either too loud; or I can't hear LO. When it's up louder; it hums. No problem during the day; but at night it's a pain. Any noise like that makes my ears ring louder come morning and has given me a headache to start my day with. Literally. I know some monitors even come with a visual indicator of a noise level. And some are supposed to only transmit vocal noise. You'd be surprised how loud the sound of my little one turning over can be. I wish I'd gone for a digital model. Live and learn I guess.

My grandparents have something similar to what you posted for the toilet support bars. They seem to work good; if we could only get my poor grandpa to get up and go without being directed to.\\
