I need some advice on how to get my cat back. Moo escaped around 10:30am. Around 2:30pm as I was in a neighbors yard I was whistling the sound she usually makes and heard her whimpering meow. I initially found her between two fences, but she bolted the second she saw me. I found her again about 30 minutes later behind a shed in my backyard. Again, she responded to me whistles and I was standing about 15 feet from her meowing and whistling, but she wouldn't come to me. She meows back in what sounded like a frightened whimpering meow and looked like she was panting Eventually she turned around and started walking away so I stood up to go around the shed and when she saw me come around she bolted again. I'm not sure what I need to do to get my cat. I put food and water out in mine and my neighbors front and back yard. I put dirty shirts out front and back of my house so hopefully she can sense where "home is". It's now about 9:15pm and I'm about to head out with a flashlight to look for her. Is it best to look for cats when it is dark out? What else should I be doing?

Look under everything she can get under. And leave the food (and maybe even a litter box) on the porch or by the door, where she needs to come in.

If you have a trap, you could set it by the door, but most of us don't have a trap just hanging around. If you're in the U.S., you can get one at Harbor Freight.

Thank you for the response

How far from the front door do you think she can smell the litterbox?

Check out my website- also check the links page as there are other sites giving you ideas about how to get your cat back. Best of luck-

www.lost-pets.org

If it were me, I wouldn't go after her until most of the world is asleep- 2:00 a.m. is the best time. I would go outside, set up a blanket and sit down with several cans of cat food. Very slowly, I would open the cans and dish them out. Of course if you live where there are wild predators this can be risky- I would just talk to her softly. She will hear you as she is staying close. Tell her how much you miss her, talk to her about your day- recite bible verses, just talk to her. Have a towel nearby so when she does come to you, you can use that to wrap her up in and get her back inside.

If you don't see her- then leave a window or something open where she can get back into the house. Don't close up your house and make her feel she has been abandoned. Again, if you live in a high-risk neighborhood this also could be risky.

In the daytime- spread several large BAGS of birdseed around your yard- the activity of the birds feeding will bring her out of hiding

Thanks hissy. I'll go out around 11 or 12 when everyone is inside and it's quiet.

I live in a 2nd fl apartment so I can't leave any doors or windows open for her unfortunately.

When it's relatively quiet out, from how far away do you think my cat could hear me if I whistle loudly?

Moo is home safely. I left the doors open up into my apartment and she came walking in around 4am! Took her 20 minutes oif meowing at the bottom of the stairs but she finally came up! She was hanging around the two neighbors yards because I could hear her responding to my whistles. Worrying is over.
