How long has it been since you quit smoking?

11 years for me. Whoohoo! I still sometimes can't believe I did it. It took six years for the cravings to leave completely.

My sister and I did it together, thank goodness for e mail. It was my first and only try. It was her fourth and last try.

Up until the cravings left completely I continued to have dreams where I would buy a pack of cigs and just smoke one or two at a time. In each dream the pack would ahve fewer cigs in it, until they were gone, then it would start with a full pack again. I no longer even have those dreams.

I used to look with longing upon people smoking and be jealous. Now I look on them with pity they all look so miserable and am SO GLAD I've already quit and will never have to go through it again, it was a terrible terrible time.

I cried almost constantly for the first three months.

I quit in February 2005, after four years of smoking. I was 18. Needed gas money to visit the now-hubby. I bought my first legal pack of cigarettes the day after my birthday, and once they were gone that was it. My hubby didn't like smoking and said he had no idea I did it the first 2 weeks we were together. But I had known he wasn't a fan of it and hadn't done it around him (he DID know, as we played "20 Questions" a lot before dating). Gas money was more important than smoking. Now I can barely stand to be downstairs at my parents' house while my dad is chain smoking, my eyes water and my chest hurts. I cant believe that's what my clothes used to smell like also.

Since I quit, I smoked 1 cigarette the following February on my birthday after much pressure into doing it. I was still longing for cigs then and many of our friends smoked. I smoked 1 cig a few days after my wedding in 2008, when I was drunk and my friend and I ran out of Black & Milds (first time smoking those. Hubby told me I could smoke as many as I wanted haha). Smoked a clove in late 08, hubby also said those are fine
But I haven't smoked anything at all since then.

September 13 will be one year! (also two days before I'm due!!! It'd be cool if he was born ON that day!)

Never smoked. Watched my Dad die of cancer of the larynx after a laryngectomy for 3 long, long years from when I was 11 to when he died when I was 14. That cured me of ever even thinking about smoking.

After smoking two packs of Marlboro 100s a day for almost 20 years, I quit smoking 15 years ago.

Quitting smoking is one of the easiest things I ever did. I quit 4 times!
I am determined to not smoke again. It's been about 2 years. I rarely get a craving now and hate being around cigarettes.

If anyone wants to pray that my husband quits, I would surely appreciate it.

For me - from the time I was born - never tried it and never will.

Hubby used to smoke (first marriage) - so he's quit at least 15 yrs and will never do it again.

The most I ever got up to was a pack a day, and that was when you could smoke in offices (I can't believe there was actually a time when offices were filled with smoke). I would smoke on temp jobs, I would smoke during rehearsal breaks when I was doing a play, I would smoke when I went out for drinks with friends, I would smoke during breaks while waitressing.

By 1980, I had been running for a couple of years, and I was down to having 1 cigarette with a glass of wine, and I finally just thought, "Why am I even doing this?"....and never bought another pack of cigarettes.

I can't believe that people can even afford to smoke these days!!! The price of a pack of cigarettes is outrageous!!!

I quit 20 years ago cold turkey. This was my 3rd try and I finally made it. It wasn't easy and I did chew lots of doublemint gum
I have found it easier tho to quit smoking than staying on a diet. Now I can't stand the smell of smoke and no one is allowed to smoke in my home or car. I had started smoking as a young teen when it was 'cool' to smoke, I am so glad I got rid of that habit.

Over 30 years - I quit some time in 1970s.

Now if I could just figure out how to give up my french fry habit, I would be in good shape

It's been about 8 years for me. Being a heart attack and bladder cancer survivor changed my mind about smoking. Grew up with smoking parents and started in college like most of my friends.

One of the times trying to quit, One of my friends had tried a suggestion to have sex in place of a cigarette. As I heard the progress, for someone that was a pack and a half a day, it got very grueling. Meals were missed, late to work, and at the end of the day, no strength and was totally exhausted. I think it was the cigarette after that blew that idea.

I quit November 22nd, 1998...and to this day don't understand how. I just woke up that morning and thought, "eww, I'm so tired of this".

After smoking for 30 years, I woke up one morning, started to "light on up"... when much to my delight, my desire to smoke was gone. I never smoked again.

In retrospect, I realize that I spent the best years of my life smelling like a dirty ashtray.
What a waste of time, money and health.
