Just thought I'd share with you a glorious day that I spent with hubby near the sea.

We drove about 4 hours away from home to spend the night near the sea. We stayed in a small pub and planned to do a walk of about 13 miles. It's a walk up a large hill (called a Down
), walk along the top overlooking the sea and a beautiful beach to a village, then back along the beach to the starting point.

Nothing quite prepared us for how beautiful it was, we were surrounded by wild flowers (including orchids); wild horses on the downs; no man made sounds; the beautiful scent of the flowers and skylarks singing above us - it was fabulous. Here are some piccies:

This one is looking back in the direction of our starting point

Looking through the foxgloves towards our destination

The village that we were walking to

These gorgeous creatures live wild on the moor/marshland, they are the Wild Marsh Ponies - the males were a fabulous site galloping down the side of the hill, neighing with their wild manes flying behind them

One of those buildings perched on the edge of the cliff is a little pub that we sat in to have a much needed drink. Well, actually we sat in the pub garden with the most fabulous view......here it is

after sitting in the pub we carried on a little further towards the rocky outcrop at the end of the village

and a very special little shop/art gallery that we called into

Now if only I could send you the gorgeous scents of the flowers and hay too

Wow that is so beautiful and I loved the pic of the horse. I have always loved horses but never could afford to own one, I think they are a beautiful creature.

Thank you for enjoying the scenery with us LaRussa, Pam and Tricia. It was a beautiful day and walking along the top of the Down, there was not a car to be heard.

One thing I didn't manage to photograph, was that on the way down from the hilltop, we came across Housemartins flying all around us, we were able to stand there for ages and watch them swoop down to a muddy area next to a small spring and collect the mud to make their nests. They were no more than a foot away from us and didn't mind us being there at all.

Beautiful photos - that sounds like an amazing day. And it looks as if you had the place all to yourself!

I had no idea that there are still beach areas on our rather beaten up planet that remain so pristine....
I think that if I had the choice to travel anywhere for a week, it would be there.
Thank you for sharing Beth.

They are gorgeous little birds and were clearly expecting to welcome the flutter of many tiny little wings judging by the furious mud-collecting activity.

We made sure we went before the children finished school for the summer holidays, we only saw people when we got to the village. On the photos of the beach you can see some tiny little specks by the edge of the sea, they are people. The beach is huge!

Thank you for sharing Beth.
My pleasure Lei, perhaps unsurprisingly a week before we went there, it was voted the most beautiful beach in Britain.

Oh WOW! What amazingly stunning pictures!
I am also a huge fan of the water and Dana and I spend a lot of time by the bay. Thanks so much for sharing, and I'm glad you had such an enjoyable time.

Stunning. I can almost smell the ocean! Thanks for taking me away from hot and humid Indiana (even if it was just for a second!)

Oh, wow. What beautiful pictures. And what a perfect day. It's exactly my idea of spending a perfect day in Britain - the Down, the hike, the pub, the ocean. *sigh* You made me feel like I was there! Where exactly was this?

Over the river and through the woods...
Thank you SO much for sharing! It looks amazing! If it wasn't for the pic of the shop/gallery which shows a car, I would swear you were transported back 200 years. I didn't know places like that still existed. I'm with Nanner...where is it?

My pleasure Chris - mind you it ended up mighty hot that day too, about 86 degrees, but there was a gorgeous wind blowing in off the sea to cool us down.

This was a place called Rhossili Down in Wales - it's a National Trust property so rightly preserved as a national treasure. It's on the Gower Peninsula which is known to be beautiful and unspoilt. About 60 years ago the Government of the day designated it as "An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" this is a special legal designation in the UK which gives the area protection.
