Dear all

My cat, Sushi, is currently almost 2 years old and experiencing blood in his stools.
I just moved into my new condo 2 weeks ago (June 21, 2010), and he is staying in a smaller room than before.
He is having grain free kibbles and cans due to sensitive digestive system. He used to have dierhea when he was a kitten so I had him on enzymes and probiotics for a few months (from Jan 2010-March 2010), and he stopped having any stool problems.
I had him living at my friends' place for 3 weeks in from June 1~20, 2010, and he was having blood in his stools from that time.
I stopped feeding him for a day or so after i moved into my new condo, and he is okay for a few days. However, i start seeing blood in his stools again.
I am wondering if the constant change of enviornment and my use of vaccum cleaner have lead to stress to cause the blood in his stool, or if there are any other reasons.

There are no changes in active level, apetite, or the amount of water he drinks.
I am attaching a picture of the stool and I am wondering if it is considered as "bright red" or "excessive amount of blood"
I am wondering if anyone have experienced the same thing or can give me any advice!

Thanks very much for your time and considerations,

Sincerely,

Cindy

I would consider that enough blood to see a vet over, and show the picture to the vet as well. I would take my cat asap if that happened. His stool looks a little runny as well. That is fresh blood so I would think it is coming out of his lower intestine. I've only experienced that once with my cat Boo (or twice really) but it never happened again. I really say you need to take this cat to a vet asap, even if he is eating normally (No puking after pooping or anytime otherwise?)

Hi Cindy. To me, that is "bright red". On the morning of the vet visit, maybe bring the poop in a strong ziploc bag especially if you see blood.

Hi, this happened to Floss once and I did take her to the vet, nothing was found in tests and I haven't seen anything again, the vet said it could be due to straining like already mentioned but it is always better to get them checked by a vet as it could prevent a problem becoming serious if caught early. x

I had a cat that had that once in a while. First time totally freaked me out. In time I learned it wasn't an immediate emergency, as long as he was acting ok. All tests turned up nothing and it was from straining and lots of irritation down there. I hope it turns out to be nothing major, but a call to the vet is a good idea, like everyone else mentioned.

Dear All:

Thank you all for replying and I highly appreciate your sincere suggesetions and experiences.

I decided to let Sushi not eat for 12 hrs or 24 hrs for his digestive systems to rest and see if he gets better. I got a fece collection bag from a vet, and if he has blood in his stool again, I will collect it and bring it to the vet.

Sushi still acts normal, lots of energy, curious, no puking at all, and wants me to pat him when I am around.

I think the reason of worms probably will not apply since Sushi's brother, Riceball, does not have any blood in his stool.

Again, thank you all for the soon replies and time, I really appreciate your help. If there are any information/suggestion/experience that you would like to provide, I would be more than happy to hear it. Thanks!

They're both housecats that have been previously dewormed and that you occasionally use flea treatments on? If so, that decreases the chance of it being worms. However, people can have cats for a while and not know they're wormy. With a steady nutrient rich diet cats often won't show signs of worms at all until they pass one.

I do suggest you collect a stool sample of his, even if there is no blood. Have them do a full panel on it for protozoa and some nasty bacterias - I can never remember the name (numbers on it to be exact) on the panel, hopefully someone else who remembers it will respond. He's had on going stool issues, so you need to have everything checked for.

Lots of things can cause blood, including lower intestinal infection. So do try to get him in soon. A little blood rarely on a strained stool can be explained, but that's just too much blood there.
