Tonight my hub, daughter and I were at the pool for my daughter's swim team practice. An hour into the session, a HUGE thunderstorm broke out so we all quickly packed up and headed home.

We were at an intersection and the water was rushing down the streets all the way to the curb. We stopped at a red light and out of the corner of my eye I saw a small kitten come out of the rushing water and grab the back tire of the suburban in front of us and climb into the wheel well! I immediately yelled at my hub, "Get out and tell them not to drive, there's a kitten on their tire!"

He ran out and stopped them and then I turned on my flashers as he looked at the tire. Now, dh is not one to ever "get involved" and he "gave up" about 5 seconds into it. I told my daughter to stay in the car and I went out. I ended up more or less sitting in the running filthy water and called the kitty and looked. It took about a minute and I saw it so I just reached in blindly, hoping for the best, grabbed and pulled him out. He responded with a lusty cry of protest.

Another car had pulled over and a young man said he was so glad we'd seen the kitten too as he'd had to circle into the parking lot and knew he'd probably be too late to save him. I said that I'd take the kitten and we loaded him up, wrapped him in my daugher's swim towel and headed home.

I called my neighbor, the cat breeder and asked if he could bunk at her house for the night. She had a cage prepared for him by the time we got there. We gave him the once over and noted no fleas or apparent diseases. He's a boy, about 10 weeks old and a plain brown tabby with an ENORMOUS low "boy voice" for his small size. He's now settled in with a cushy bed, litter tray, food and water. She'll call a friend in the morning about taking a "new barn cat" and I said I'd pay for his neuter if she will. I cannot take any more cats for myself.

Anyway, I'm soooooooo glad we were able to save the kit's life. I would have been traumatized for MONTHS had the light changed and the car moved. Now I just hope his new "forever home" is just a phone call away.

Thanks for listening....

Cally

These rescue stories make me cry every time. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you, your hubby (even though he "gave up" too soon
), your daughter, the other man who wanted to save the kitty, and your neighbor. Not to mention every person who fosters or adopts homeless animals.

Here's hoping this little guy gets a wonderful furrever home. He certainly seems to have the best of luck!!

I'm so glad that you were there! That poor kitty! So glad that he's safe and warm now. No kitty, or other animal should know such terror. What a horrid experience for the little guy!

Do you have pictures?

YAY!!
Good for you! Poor little thing was probably terrified! To end up in a nice, dry place, with people taking care of him......now that's a happy ending - even happier if he finds a furever home.....which I'm sure he will!! Thanks for rescuing him!

Thanks, everyone!

I thought during the night again how everything seemed to fall into place. I'm not sure I would have opened my car window to a man knocking on it during the rain. And the story---pretty far fetched and could have been a clever ploy to get someone out of their car and then steal it.

I remember the woman who drove the Suburban saying, "I hope you like cats!" when I dragged the poor little dustmite out of that wheel well. I thought to myself, "Do I like cats! Heck YEAH!" LOL

Sorry, no pictures. I was soaked with rain and dirt from the kitten and we went straight to the neighbor's. The baby was soaked to the bone so she quickly got him into a draped, warm cage. She didn't want to use the hair dryer on him and further his trauma. I'll probably go over today and if I do, I'll get a pic. Rest assured, tho, that he's the plainest of plain brown tabbies in appearance. Of course we're not even sure of his personality yet, as he was pretty much frozen with fear last night. He could be as wild as a March hare!

I'll keep you updated. Thanks for the kind words.

Cally---Oh, and my neighbor says I owe her one for letting him bunk there. She says I need to take one of her pet quality Wirehair kittens---HA! (I've taken 3 already!)

I would have done the same thing. Saved a mama duck and ducklings a few years back, nearly got killed in traffic doing it.

You know what I call "plain brown tabbies?"

"The basic stock of the animal that made civilization possible."

That is basically what the little African wildcat who walked into Egyptian villages looked like.

I guess you have just returned the favor! Maybe the goddess Bast will reward you.

Thanks Mike!

My neighbor reports that kitty had a good night and is all dry and fluffy this morning. He's hanging out in the litter tray.
She also said he ate every scrap of food she'd left in the cage, and trust me...she's generous with the groceries!

I'm going over tonight to photograph some of her pedigreed kittens for her, so will take a moment to see him, too. I'll post the photo when I get it.

Oh how wonderful you saved this kitty's life. This is the best news I've heard all day, thank God you saw the kitten and saved him. In some way, you will be rewarded for this altho just knowing you saved his life is probably reward enough for you.
