My kittens were born on april 17th - so at the end of June they should be ready to go to their new homes (except the runt which we are keeping =)

What is the best way to minimize trauam for momma -- I am sure she won't be too happy about her babies going.

We are going to take her to get spayed after the kittens are gone -- what if we take her to get it done and get rid of the cats in her absence - would this work or cause her more trauma?

THANKS =)

I'm glad you asked this because end of July we will be rehoming our kittens too. Do you think it's very traumatic for the queen after the kittens reach a certain age? Since you are keeping one, maybe it won't be too much stress on her.

The end of June is too early for the kittens to leave their mother if they were born April 17th, that only makes them 6 weeks. They need to stay until 10-12 weeks. This is a crucial time for them, as they learn good/bad behaviors from their mother & littermates (they learn not to bite, scratch, litterbox usage, etc). I would not let them go until late July.

actually, that would make them about 10 weeks if they go at the end of this month. Two months exactly would be June 17th
, so for 10 weeks end of June sounds about right (too late to do precise math right now
).

I was worried about the same thing a year ago when I found homes for Slicks babies.

I let them go in stages. Not all at once. She never showed any reaction. Of course, I ended up keeping two.

By that time she'll be so sick of them she won't care, LOL. Sonja didn't seem to mind when we gave away her sons. We did keep Scotty, though.

Getting rid of? Not a term I would use..

Adpoting them out over several days often helps. Many mums are not "sick of them" by 12 weeks and will fret if they all leave at once.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Giving up the kittens is very hard for us and as a mother I just don't want our cat to have any heart ache in all of this.

Thanks for your support -- I wasn't really looking for a semantics lesson though...

Let us know how it goes when you give the kittens away. I have some that will be ready at the end of July and I'm worried about how Baby Girl is going to take it.

First of all I want to wish you luck in adopting out your babies.

I have fostered many litters of kittens, and most of the time when the kittens are old enough to go, the mothers almost breath a sign of relief...lol. A lot of times they get to the point where they've had enough and seperating them isn't always such a bad thing. She may cry looking for them for the first day or two, but just give her lots of love and attention and she will be fine, especially where you are keeping one.

OMG this will kill me!!! But I know it's for the best

I will give 2 away and then keep the other 2 for at least a week before giving them up =) It's also going be hard on my kids!
I'll let you know how it goes for when you have to re-home Baby Girl's babies =)

Our kittens left over a period of a few days. I was more upset than mom. When I got my pomerainian puppy the breeder called me, 2 weeks early to come get Bear her Mom had, had enough or her
