Vibes for Buster, pretty please! (Ear)

Some of you may recall the story of Buster, DH's office cat who has been having a problem with his ear. It was bleeding; now it is filled with goop. Our regular vet had cauterized the area to try to stop the bleeding, but thought there may be a mass deep in the ear. He arranged for us to take him to a specialist for possible eardrum removal.

Buster was finally evaluated by the specialist yesterday. He could not see any masses in his ear, but was having a very hard time doing the exam because Buster was upset. The specialist thinks that it is a middle ear infection, which he says cannot be cleared with antibiotics. On Wednesday, he will put Buster under to clean, exam, and x-ray the ear. He will also evaluate the other ear at that time. I do worry about the risks associated with anesthesia, but there really aren't any other options. I really like the specialist, he was so nice, and that makes me feel a little better.

If you could spare some vibes for Buster, we would certainly appreciate it. We are hoping it is only a middle ear infection and that eardrum removal is not necessary.

I'll be thinking of Buster on Wednesday. It sounds like he will be in good hands, and I'm sure he will be much relieved to have the ear cleaned out once and for all. I hope too the ear drum doesn't have to be removed, but even if it does, Buster will be okay.

Keep us posted!

Buster!

They did the x-rays and checked Buster's ear under sedation today. The vet called DH and said that Buster has cancer. He went ahead and did surgery on his ear today. I don't know many details, but after we pick him up we are going to board him at our regular vet's because we feel they are more capable of caring for him, at least until the collar comes off. He will be wearing...what is it called...an "Elizabethan" collar. I might have spelled that wrong, but it's the collar that looks like a lampshade. Bless his heart.

You got the collar name right. Well I'm sorry it's not better news, but Buster is getting the care he needs, and that is the most important thing. He is a well loved kitty cat.

Please keep us posted on his progress.

DH called to check on Buster this morning. As of yet, he is not eating. I am glad that he is at an office that is open 24 hours. It does not look like we will get to pick him up as early as we had planned.

Thank you. When I called tonight the receptionist said he has a buffet of food in his cage but is still not eating. They have tried hand feeding him. They are going to give him something to stimulate his appetite. We are going to visit him tomorrow and take some of his favorite food (for some reason, they had told DH not to bring his regular food for after the surgery). I hope DH can get him to eat something. DH feels terrible. He is worried that he made a mistake by okaying the surgery. I don't want DH to feel guilty, he's trying so hard to do what is best.

We went to visit Buster today...he acted like he didn't know DH at first and then he made a beeline for him. They were so happy to see each other. We took the food Buster likes and he ate quite a bit for us. I think this is the first he has eaten since the surgery, though he does have an IV, so he is getting nourishment. (However, when I was in the hospital they kept me without food for five days, so I know it's not easy living off an IV.) We left a supply of his food there, but if he doesn't eat for them we are going back to feed him again ourselves. Still not sure when he'll get to leave the hospital.

YAY! So glad Buster has eaten and enjoyed his visit with your husband.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Hope you can go home soon Buster!

That visit did both your DH and Buster a world of good. I hope he gets to come home. We all know humans seem to get better quicker when in their own familiar surroundings.

Get well Buster!!

Thank you all once again. We went to visit Buster Sunday and he is looking and eating good. He was much more alert during this visit...even growling at the vet tech when she went to take him back to his cage. We will be bringing him home as soon as the Penrose drain is removed from his ear. DH is concerned about balance issues, but I think once that collar can be taken off for good, Buster manage quite well.

Buster is home! He is recovering nicely and resting well. The collar gets on his nerves, but he is handling it much better than I would. It's amazing how well animals adapt. He'll have his stitches out and the collar off in no time. We are going to take it off an hour or so a day under close observation. DH, Buster and I really appeciate your support through this ordeal.
