So, at our local RSPCA they told us that FancyFeast is just like McDonalds for cats. We feed our cat Jazzy this all the time, will it be okay for us to keep feeding her this?

Tolly thrived on Fancy Feast Grilled Salmon, the only food he would eat, for many years.

However most FF contains artificial preservatives, colors and flavors, and because Tolly's liver is beginning to show damage from his phenobarbital I had to find something else for him. It took two years of experimentation.

My own personal opinion is that canned fancy feast is no better or worse than the other grocery store canned foods such as friskies, 9 lives, etc.

Many thrive on it ... IMHO the ingredients are not wonderful but if it gets a cat to eat wet food so be it

It likely comes out of the same factories as all the other foods.

It's true there is a best food for cats, but that doesn't mean they'll eat it. Or that you can get it.

My brother had two cats (one still living) that ate nothing but Purina Cat Chow and lived to ripe old ages, 17+.

We call it the junk food for kittens and use it with kittens or cats who simply stop eating. once they begin to eat again, we slowly switch to a better food for the health of the cat.

Thanks everyone! I'm not sure what we should do though, she's been eating it for around 5 years.

What can you get in Australia and what can you afford? Look for wet foods with no preservatives, additives or artificial colors and flavors. Sharky says by-products in wet is ok because it is mostly organ meat, etc. (I'd also stay away from soy, IMO -- that seems to cause issues with MY boys.)

I'm gonna side with the shelter. FF is more of kitty junk food. If you give as a treat, fine, but not as a steady diet. You can mix some with higher quality food till they are eating the better food.

I'm glad none of my cats even LIKE Fancy Feast.

For years all Dusty would eat was FF. A few months ago I bought some canned Friskies. She liked it. I figured if FF was junk and Friskies was no better, at least it was cheaper junk.

Then I bought some Costco/Kirkland dry food. Both my cats love it! Now they barely touch the canned Friskies. I always kept dry food available in the bedroom for night time snacks to keep them from waking us up at 3 am. I don't know what to do about getting them to eat some wet again.

I have to say that Fancy Feast IS wet food. I'd much much prefer to feed junky wet food than any "high quality" dry.

You have a point, but when I only fed FF I would wake up at 3 am with a very hungry kitty. I sleep much better now.

Our cats get about 2/3 wet and 1/3 dry food. They are picky eaters, and on top of that, many foods give them loose stools.

After much experimentation, including a raw diet, additives (pro/prebiotics, digestive enzymes), etc, we have resolved ourselves to feeding a couple different flavors of FF, along with EVO dry food.

We figure that, even if the FF is akin to junk food, at least their dry food is good quality! We also use the FF flavors that seem to have a little less "junk" in them.

In the end, you gotta do what works for YOU and YOUR KITTIES!

Good luck ...

I was about to post a question along these lines. My Brady seems to only like supermarket wet foods. He gets Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul dry, and he drinks plenty of water. I want to give him some wet too and I've tried giving him everything from FF to Merricks and inbetween, I've tried Felidae, Iams, and it seems like the more I pay for it, the dirtier the look he gives me at finding it in his bowl. About the only wet foods he'll eat are the FF souffle and Whiskas entree. Everything else ends up going into the trash.

What flavors would those be? Mine only like certain Fancy Feast fish flavors. I'm having the same problem as other people: I try to give them healthier canned food and they want nothing to do with it — the 2nd or 3rd time. This is after I've gotten excited when they ate it the first time, and stocked up! I never learn.... but I'm curious to know if some FF flavors are healthier than others.

You have to read the labels. Most contain some form of artificial ingredients, either preservatives, color or flavor, or all three. But so do most of the other canned foods on the grocery store shelves.

But, as was said, the bottom line is what they will eat.

I'd be happy if my junk food kitty Lily would eat FF. She is a dry junkie and despite my very strong efforts, that's what she will remain. She'll lick the moisture off of canned food (I've tried everything from FF to Evo) but she isn't interested in the food itself. Her current diet is a 50/50 mix of Purina One and Acana. I try to decrease the Purina and she freaks the heck out.

Sometimes you have to accept that your cat is just going to do her thing.

ARGH Brady does that too! I try a new brand that I think we'll be better for him - get ONE can, he eats it so I buy six or more. Then he looks at me like I've put garbage in his bowl and he stalks off! I've given away so many cans of better cat food to the local humane society it isn't funny!
