When I got Merlin last September I noticed that his the upper gums at the back of his jaw were swollen and red. The vet said that there is a tendency toward gingivitis in abyssinians and I should just keep an eye on it. I do attempt to brush his teeth 5-6 times a week. He actually end up eating most of the enzymatic toothpaste. He thinks it's a special treat just for him.
A couple of weeks ago I saw that the gums were looking a lot worse, extremely red and swollen enough to completely cover his back teeth. I can't say that it actually hurts him. It certainly hasn't slowed down his eating. Anyway, the vet gave him a cortisone shot to try to shrink the gums down. It did help some with the inflammation, but apparently the overgrowth is not going to go away. The teeth underneath the flap of gum appear to be in good condition.
Merlin goes in tomorrow for a dental under anesthesia. They will trim back the gums and clean his teeth. His surgery will be in the morning and he'll be ready to come home by 4:00 PM, except I won't be able to pick him up until later. I have piano students until 4:30.
Merlin could use some TCS vibes for an uneventful surgery.
