Even though this is about dogs rather than cats, I think it is a wonderful program. It gives inmates the opportunity to learn dog training from a professional trainer and gives hard to adopt dogs (from a high-kill gas chamber shelter) a much better chance of adoption. I have been to a dog graduation, and it was great. They demonstrated all sorts of tricks. It may take some wading through my home town newspaper to find the article, but I thought some of you might like to read it. I am computer challenged, so it took me about 20 minutes just to post this link
. I'm sure there was an easier way. I apologize to the moderators if I am posting in the wrong forum; I am forever doing that and I don't mean to.
Anyway, here goes:

I heard about this on Animal Planet. I think it's a wonderful idea. The candidates, both canine and human, are very much benefiting from this experience.

I had wondered why they always choose big black dogs at Gaston. The article answered the question for me. (I have seen pictures of smaller dogs from another unit listed on PetFinder.) I really hope we get this program at the prison where I work (Lincoln). It was mentioned in the article, though I haven't heard about any plans for it at work. I hope they can somehow get the funding, but being from NC, you know how our state budget is right now.
