So she lets you pick them up and everything? Hooray!

no, I haven't picked them up yet(doing that tonight!) but they love sticking their little butts in the air for some reason. Callie is being very protective of them but she's feral, so I was wondering if it will make her abandon them if I insist on handling them?

How protective is she of them? Like does she seem like she'd get mad at you if you touched them? If so, you may want to hold off...if she just seems nervous, pet her before you touch the kittens. Scratch her under the chin(almost all kitties love that!) to show her you're friendly, them try to pet a kitten. If she's alright, you can try picking one up, but make sure she can see it at all times

umm... she might scratch me if I touch her. I've only touched her head at this point and, on the second time, was awarded with a lovely hiss. Normally I wouldn't be as insistant to hold the babies, but I want them to know from BIRTH that humans are trustworthy. Plus, I'm hoping that my scent on them will help teach her I'm a good guy(instead of the kitty eating monster she seems to think I am-that is unless I'm feeding her,) I know she is going to be mad( I will be wearing gloves and several long sleeved shirts just in case) but will it cause her to abandon the babies? Oh and to answer your other question, she doesn't mind me being about an inch away from them looking at them(drooling over them might be a better description) but I think it would make her nervous and/or defensive if I tried to pick them up.

Hm...that's difficult when she's still so nervous...would it make sense for you to bring her some wet food as a "peace offering"?
As nice as it it to be able to hold them, it's not necessary for them to be held from birth, but I do know the temptation! Sooner or later you're going to have to change the bedding too...
I can't answer whether she'd abandon them, but you don't want to make her mad or scared about her babies- Mom's can be very protective...

I was thinking along those lines too. Now this isn't a good diet for all the time, but for the first few days, I brought Elsa deli turkey for a snack while she was nursing. She's kind of a captive audience, and food helps grease the wheels a lot...

Hey, any new updates on the kittens?! I'm very curious!! How is mum doing too? I hope you've gotten to at least touch them a little, if she isn't too protective!

Sorry it's been awhile since I updated, we've been busy, lol. After checking again I believe all the babies are BOYS. All of their eyes are open and they now can get in and out of their nest box. I hold them about once a day for about 15min. Callie is one of the moodiest cats I've ever seen! Sometimes I can open the cage and clean everything, refill food and water, and even hold the babies(if she isn't in the box with them) otherdays even if I feed her through the bars she attempts to attack me(I now always wear gloves). Oh! one other big piece of news- Callie is now fostering 2 little girls. They're a few days older than mine, but they are HALF the size of mine. Their mom managed to escape out of the house and a neighbor killed her(poisoned). The little ones were only a week old then. Their owner was bottle feeding them, but they just weren't thriving on it(one died). When they arrived they didn't even remember how to nurse, but they have quickly picked it up. These 2 are very unique too in that one has 11 toes on the front paws and the other has 12! The really weird part? Their mom had 13!

That's cool that Callie has taken in two other babies!

Great to hear an update from you! It's good to hear that all of the kittens are healthy, and a bunch o' boys will surely be a handful!! How nice Callie for taking on those two kittens as well, poor little things. And how kind you are for adding them to your home as well I am pretty sure it's illegal to put out poison for cats, so if you know which neighbor poisoned here I would highly recommend placing an anonymous call to Animal Control. Overall, from what I've read on this forum and just in general, kittens will do better if they nurse from a mother cat instead of bottle feeding, and it's good for them to get socialized with other cats as well And moody cats... I think moody is just a synonym for cat

Say....do you have any pictures for us?
