I haven't been on here much for the past few days, but Marshmallow is very sick. He is sneezing, his breathing sounds bad, he is lethargic, and has blood in stool. This was a rather sudden onset, starting out as what seemed like a cold a few days ago. I slept on the sofa the other night, because he has taken to sleeping in my place on the bed. (Truthfully, I usually move him aside, but I didn't have the heart to since he was sick.) We took him to the vet first thing this a.m. and he had a temperature of 104.0. ( I don't know what a cat's temperature is supposed to be, but the vet said he had "quite a temperature".) The vet kept asking if he goes outside, but no, Marshmallow is strictly and indoor cat. He said it seemed like a viral infection, though none of my other cats are sick.

They gave him an I.V. (I had a mental image of them hooking him up to a little IV bag, but actually they gave it as a bolus under his skin...he had a hump on his back until it absorbed into his system.) He also gave him an antibiotic and something to reduce the fever. We have to continue the antibiotics for a week and give another dose of the fever reduction medicine tomorrow. Marshmallow seems to be feeling significantly better already. He went straight to the food when he came home and then had a drink of water. He's not a big eater anyway, so I thought this was a good sign. The only thing the vet couldn't explain was the blood in the stool, which he saw himself when he took his temperature. I am hoping it is just an aspect of the virus that will resolve soon. If not, there will be further testing.

Also, DH's office cat, Buster, has a tumor in his ear. He doesn't seem to be feeling bad (he's eating normally, etc.), but his ear started bleeding. He went to the vet at the first of the week. The vet prescribed medicine in hopes of shrinking the tumor. DH has to make a decision about whether to have surgery to remove Buster's eardrum and have his ear sewn shut. Our vet knows someone that can do the surgery. It will cost $1,300. I don't want this to be a factor. I told DH the decision was between him and Buster. He doesn't want to have him PTS, but there is the issue of Buster having the surgery at his age. He is 15 years old.

Sorry to be so long, but if you can spare us some prayers and vibes, we would appreciate it. Thanks.

Oh, so sorry that everything is happening at once for your kitties - but I hope things are better by morning for all of you and the treatments work wonders for both of them. That's a hard call on Buster given his age, but you're a loving wife for reassuring your husband that finances should not be part of the decision if you can swing it and if Buster has a good chance of getting through the surgery if needed.

Your cats have the most important thing - a very loving home.

Did the vet say whether they wanted to double check for viruses? They can be tested for. I don't like the blood in the stool not being explained, it's worrisome. Has he had another BM with blood in it?
What consistency was his other one? Firm? normal? loose?

Poor Buster.

I hope they both start doing better soon.

The vet didn't mention double checking...I just figured we would have it done if Marshmallow didn't start showing signs of improvement soon. His BM did not contain blood yesterday afternoon, though it was still loose. It worries me, too, especially since the vet couldn't relate it to the virus.

DH gave Marshmallow his other dose of fever reducer this a.m. while I was still sleeping. (He woke me up to verify the dose.) He tried to put Marshmallow beside me in bed, but he jumped down. After I ate breakfast, I went on a cat search. I found Daisy, Speck and Marshmallow at the front window. Marshmallow was standing up on his hind legs looking out at birds. This is great news. Then he went into the kitchen for a bite to eat. He hasn't an interest in anything except bed in days. I forgot to mention that he'd fallen when he tried to jump down from the cat tree the night before we went to the vet. The vet said "he must be exhausted". Now he is perking back up! I can tell he's still not feeling his best, but he has made a marked improvement since just yesterday.

I will also keep you posted on Buster. Our vet does not know if the tumor is benign or malignant, or if it has spread to other areas. I guess he could do a biopsy, but it's really not wise to mess with a malignancy unless you're prepared to take action immediately. That's IMHO as a nurse, but sometimes things are better not disturbed.

Thank you all for the vibes and prayers! You can't imagine how much your caring and support means. You are wonderful.

So glad Marshmallow is doing better.

I know a senior female kitty who had a nasty tumor removed from her ear. her people opted against the biopsy, but the removal of the thing has given her new life.

I prefer to know. Even if I didn't plan on following through with cancer treatments, I prefer to know.

It's tough to juggle out all the factors and try to find the best choice. Plenty of vibes to you and your cats.

Hey, I just wanted to chime in on this second part here. One of my two cats had this same problem, and I adopted him deaf in one ear because of it. If it helps at all, please let your husband know that my kitty has suffered absolutely no ill effects from it. He did have it done as a kitten, in the interest of full disclosure, and the rescue agency paid for it to be done before I adopted him, so I can't comment on the cost - just on the fact that my healthy happy boy came through it without any concerns. If anything, he has an EXCUSE for doing that whole "pretending not to hear mom" thing that cats do. He's a little batty, but I don't think that came from his ear surgery!

Also, it was completely benign.

We've had a very busy week. Speck got sick Sunday night and DH and I were up most of the night. Then Siamie got sick yesterday. She has renal disease, so sometimes she has problems related to that. I am happy to say that all three cats are doing better. Speck is back to his normal, playful self. And Siamie is also feeling better. She is the only cat that is allowed outside and we sat in the backyard for quite a while this afternoon. She loves to bask in the sun.

It's very encouraging to hear of cats that lead normal lives after having the ear surgery done. I will let DH know and maybe this will help him with his decision.

Once again, thank you all. TCS members are the greatest!

Glad to hear that today is better. The last few days must have been so stressful for you. I'm sending vibes your way from up North!

Thank you!

DH took Buster to our primary vet today because Buster scratches his ear and keeps it bleeding. Our vet told DH that he is going to try to remove the tumor, since it is no bigger than a polyp, then cauterize the area. I don't think he would attempt it unless he was confident he could do it, and I have a great deal of confidence in our vet (much more so than in our own family doctors as far as their people care skills go - but that's a whole 'nother story). So Buster is at the vet right now.

Marshmallow's breathing has worsened. He is still on antibiotics but I can tell he's not feeling good again. Our yard is full of flowering things and the pollen is very bad in NC right now. I'm wondering if his problem could be triggered by allergies or maybe even asthma? He is wheezing some, though it sounds more like it is from being congested again. If he has made a marked improvement by the time the antibiotics are finished, back to the vet he goes.
