Oops, my daughter had to take a hard boiled egg to school to decorate for easter, so I thought I would put it in the microwave to boil. Bad mistake, 10 minutes later all was going fine when suddenly the door flew open, out shot the egg, the door slammed shut and the microwave went bang
Needless to say I need a new microwave (gosh didn't know how much I used it, till now).My mum said I should have pierced it before
Gosh it was funny though. x

Ummm . . . just for future reference, piercing the eggshell first doesn't work either.

I used to work at a small kitchen store for 4 years and we sold egg cookers for the microwave. I think they were for poaching eggs though, not hard boiling them (don't know what the difference is, I don't eat eggs
). Never had any complaints on them. I never knew an egg could explode in the microwave, yikes!

I love to cook but have a problem with my attention span. We had two rules in the house when I was growing up.
1) Joan is not allowed to leave the kitchen when anything is cooking on the stove.
2) Joan is not allowed to have a book in the kitchen when anything is cooking on the stove.

I thought the microwave was going to be a lifesaver. Unfortunately, I seem to still be at the stage of learning by trial and . . . er . . . error.

BTW does anybody know how to get a charcoal layer (formerly tomato soup) off a stainless steel pan?

Just stainless? No other coatings? Soak it a bit, then use either a copper scourer or fine steel wool. Warning: It will scratch up the stainless a little.
To get the smaller bits out use a new blue scourer (like scotch brite).

There's probably other methods involving scouring powders or salt, but they'll all involve you working at it for a bit and I prefer to just go straight at it with the method above.
Lighter stuff could come off with just baking soda or a magic eraser. I've also heard of boiling vinegar in a pan - no idea if that works.

As for eggs in the microwave... I thought that was a well known no-no.
There should be youtube videos showing what happens when you try that and microwaving other items that should not be put in a microwave. btw, no whole (pierced) potatoes, either.
