Tiki has been a part of my life for almost a year now and I'm still learning new things about her breed. The one thing that I have not been able to find out is the normal weight for a Himalayan. All that I have found is that they are "bigger and stockier" types of cats. She's quite small and she's almost 2 years old. At the last Vet check, she weighed just under 8 pounds but she seems lighter than that to me.

I've search the internet high and low, but haven't found anything about their average weights. If anyone has any info, could you please share it with me?

Thank you so much!

8lbs is an OK weight. Has she been scanned for PKD? Many persians and himmies had this genitic kidney problem. Call around and get the best price as some vets will try to gouge you. I have found the scans to run from $275.00 down to $50.00.

No she hasn't been scanned for that! Since I'm not thrilled with the Vets around here, I will probably wait until September when I move (if I move to Lincoln, there are so many Vets there so I have to check out the prices for that). Or is this something I should get done right away? Thank you so much for letting me know that!

So, 8 pounds is normal? There are times when I brush her out, I can feel the bones in her hips and lower spine. That's why I was worried that she was underweight. She eats normal...not a lot, but normal feedings.

You could have her checked or worms. This is flea season and fleas can pass on tape worms.

There is no cure for PKD. It is cysts that are present in the kidneys at birth. As the cat gets older the cysts grow blocking normal funtion. It usually makes itself known at about the 7th year in the cats life.

9-12 pounds is the ideal weight for a Himmy

We went through the worm thing a couple of months ago...all three were infected! But, we got that under control & have been giving them Advantage every month, so we don't have a flea problem at all.

I will definitely chat with my Vet about PKD and see what she has to say. But honestly, I don't agree with her very often & I don't really like our other Vet in town...so I might wait until I get moved. I've heard that there is an excellent Vet about 30 miles from here...so I'm thinking about checking them out too.

Thanks for all the help!
