*Hello (:

I just came across this message board because last night we had to take our family cat Sidney to the emergency vet. Below is the story of what happened that I typed for a friend.....

My mom and I had to take our part Siamese cat, Sidney to the emergency vet tonight (I know it's technically Saturday but I'm writing this as it was Friday). I noticed that around 5:45pm that I hadn't seen him since I had gotten home from my dr's appt. I looked all around the house and started panicking because I remembered that earlier I had heard him crying. When he cries it usually means he's lonely or "caught" a toy mouse and I call his name and he finds me. He never came to me which is strange. So at this point I'm running around calling and calling him and finally find him just laying/sitting. I was just relieved to find him so I let him be. But when my mom got home he was still in the same spot and he always greets her. He greets all of us. We knew something was wrong when he didn't greet her and after she ate dinner I picked him up and he yowled and yowled and his lower sides were trembling.

I checked his behind to see if he had eaten something and it was stuck coming out and perhaps it was half way out. He has this problem from time to time where he eats something like easter grass and we need to pull it out, sorry, tmi lol. But his butt looked fine. He didn't want to sit though, he would try but he couldn't get his butt to touch the bed, it was always a few inches off.

I called our vet who was closed but left a message anyway just in case they happened to check their voice mail like they do after they close but they didn't call back. He tried jumping off the bed but couldn't, he wanted off the bed but was really hesitant about jumping off because it would hurt so I lifted him down and he slowly walked to the bathroom. I put a blanket and his cat water fountain in there and sat by him. I could tell he was in a lot of pain and I thought he felt hot.

My mom and I decided to take him to the emergency vet which we hate doing because it's so expensive. He has to stay overnight and tomorrow morning my mom and I will pick him up and take him to our vet for an ultrasound because it will be cheaper.

The xrays show that there is a lot of cat food in his belly so he obviously hasn't pooped. Something is obstructing the food from coming out but they don't know what. The vet sent the xrays to a radiologist who emailed back and said that Sidney doesn't need surgery at this point but he does need an ultrasound to see if that can determine what foreign object could be in there.

Sidney does have a temperature too. And his blood work showed low white count so there is also an infection going on somewhere. It's not in his kidneys or liver thank goodness as those blood test results were good. It could be Pancreatitis because the one blood test came back a little weird that is related to the pancreas. But, it could be an UTI or an intestinal infection. We just don't know.

The vet's words were that he is in tremendous pain. And even if he did need surgery, he couldn't have it until he's stable. He is dehydrated, in pain, and has an infection. So he's staying overnight getting IV fluids, antibiotics (not sure if it's by IV or not) and pain meds. And in the morning we're picking him up and taking him to our vet for an ultrasound.

We can also call to check on him throughout the night and so far he's doing good, just loopy up on pain meds.

It's a very touch and go situation. We don't know if we'll come home with our Sid Sid (as we call him) at all.....
I don't even want to think about that with just having to put Bunny down in November and my Ricky kitty dieing on Good Friday last year.

I'm trying my very best to stay positive and Sidney, my mom, brother, and I could all use as many prayers as you can give us!

*My mom and I are going to go pick him very soon to take him to our vet for the ultrasound. I hope everything will be ok.

I do hope you get good news of you boy Sid soon. But if you have recently pulled anything out of his behind the vet needs to know about it. It is always a very bad idea to do that, as it can cause a twisted or even perforated gut. Let things happen naturally, or else take a cat tot he vet if it is straining or there is anything that seems abnormal. But good luck with him.

Your discription of his squatting and soreness is exactly how my Sasha acted yesterday morning. His urethra had just become plugged with a crystal. He has been battling a bladder infection and crystals for five weeks now. He is at the vet's with a catheter inserted even as I write this.

Sid's bladder may not have looked full on the x-ray. Sasha had drained his bladder pretty much when the crystal lodged. Picture something floating in the sink and getting sucked down the drain and clogging it. It really hurt. I could see him wincing with each stab of pain. He stood in one spot motionless for a half hour. He didn't budge when my wife petted him. He NEVER sits still for a pet from Becky.

Also, Sasha's first x-ray showed a lot of food still in his colon. It was not distended or streched though. He did not want to poo either.

First of all best wishes for you and for Sidney. Going to the emergency vet was 100% the right thing for you to do to help him.

I agree with a poster above, my first thought was crystal formation. I know that he has some food he hasn't passed but I sort of wonder if the pain of trying to pee has made him scared of trying or going in his litter box.

I hope you get some answers soon and that everything will turn out fine =D

Yes, I was thinking about this too.

Anyway, all my thoughts and prayers that your Sidney will be okay. I too thought urinary blockage when I first read your post. This causes terrible pain in a male cat.

Please do come back and let us know how your beloved Sidney is doing.

I would call the vet and ask for a urinary pH test. And to know if he has peed.

If it is crystals, then it sounds like he is blocked, and a blocked cat can die after just 48 hrs. I had a cat that blocked and his symptoms were very simlar.

Oh, and if he has something hanging out of his but (like easter grass) do not pull on it, that can cause cuts inside of him. It is best to cut it off with scissors close to his body, but do not pul on it! Have you pulled anything out of him reccently? If so tell the vet, that may have something to do with it.

Good Luck,

Sidney's Pancreatitis blood panel came back today. Mild pancreatitis in cats is 5.6 (I believe that's what the vet said anyway) and his is 22 something. So he is a very sick kitty. He is also jaundiced with a little elevated bilirubin. His blood sugar is also a little elevated. The blood sugar is most likely caused from the Pancreatitis, stress, and the anorexia that he has just developed.

He came home last night just for the night and went back to our vet this morning. They sent him home to see if he would eat here in his own home because they've tried everything, all types of dry and canned and even microwaving the canned foods. He wouldn't eat even here. I moved his water fountain and food, and a new litter box into the bath room and he only drank a lot of water and peed a lot. Wouldn't eat and never pooped. It was great having him home even if it was for the night. He wasn't himself but he was still being as affectionate as he could be.

Apparently, Pancreatitis in cats isn't as well researched as it is in dogs and humans, but the best treatment is Cortisone. They will be giving him some of that and hopefully the Cortisone will not increase the blood sugar too much.

They did feed him a lot by syringe and will do that a few times before leaving the office for the night. They need to get him eating in the next 48-72 hours or the vet said they will need to put in a feeding tube.
