I'm just wondering if there's some sort of virus/etc going around right now?? Anyone else been sick recently?

I belive I have something going on. I have an appointment tomorrow with my cardiologist (I made it several weeks ago for a normal heart checkup - but I'm going to run this stomach crud by him too and see what he thinks.)

Monday I went to the dentist for some dental work and then immediately after I left I became violently ill on the ride home. (This has only happened once before a few years ago after a root canal...so I thought I was just having a bad reaction to the injections/gases he gave me.) I had (and still have) nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, dizzy spells, tachycardia (rapid heart rate). I thought it was just the combination of the injections and the gases he gave me, but now I'm not so sure...they typically do not make me ill. I've only become ill once before from a dental visit and it was when I also had a root canal done. (in a side note, my dentist knows about my heart condition, so he is very diligent about what he gives me and the duration that I'm in there...a lot of my visits get split up into two.) The last time I got sick from a visit with the dentist- it wore off after a day. This is day 3 of me feeling horrid, and I'm worse than I ever was on Monday. (I missed Monday because I was too weak to move. I literally drug myself in yesterday because we had a huge test...I became sick twice twice yesterday while I was at school. Today I'm worse than ever, so I'm missing a second day now. There goes my perfect attendance for the semester!
) I think maybe the dental visit just triggered what was already going on? Today I got dressed and left for school and only made it 3 streets over before I got quite ill again, so I came home and I'm calling it a day. I feel worse today than I did on Monday.

At first I thought it was just realted to the dental work I had done on Monday....but when I started thinking about it, some of my other classmates have missed school recently with the same symptoms, so I think it's some sort of bug possibly. I wonder if there's just something going around? Are any of you guys currently sick with similar symptoms? I know there's no way to diagnose anything online (that and I have a doctor's appointment in the morning), I'm just curious if it's going around more than one city at the moment? I've had several classmates come down with the same symptoms recently (aside from tachycardia...but since I have a 2 heart conditions, it could just be me), so mabye it's a virus?

There is some sort of thing going around with those symptoms. I had them before Christmas and it left me very weak for a week or so afterwards. Sis and BIL,and a couple of friends had it,too.

A lot of ANS symptoms there, so it could have been the dental work. I hope your cardiologist can give you some ideas - I wouldn't be surprised if he worries about you getting dehydrated, though. That's one of the things that makes the tach much worse.

My last root canal went fine.
I told the dentist about my postural tach and that laying me back as far as possible would help. Plus I double dosed on midodrine, and fluid and salt loaded a few days leading up to it.
Past visits to dentists, especially ones that used epi in the locals, left me sick for a few days - can't say they ever caused cramping and diarrhea, though, as that's been a regular problem for many years.

Not yet! But give me a day or two! The girl who sits directly next to me came to work sick. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea...sneezing up a storm.

I hope you feel better soon!!

Yup.

I've been sick on and off since Christmas night

A fair amount of people around here are getting this sinus thing that really knocks you on your butt.

Feel better soon.

I appreciate the vibes. Thankyou everyone

It's definitely a virus.
I saw the cardiologist today and he told me I'm the 6th person he's seen this week with the same symptoms. He thinks the virus has been in my body for a little while now and the trip to the dentist triggered it. He said I should be over it in a few days so that's good news to hear! The downside is with my heart condition/ and my autonimic nervous system though. What might be a mild virus for someone else has turned into a horrid one for me. Case in point- Jack is feeling sick too with similar symptoms - but it's soo mild you'd never notice....me on the other hand- I can't eat or move without getting sick. Hopefully it will go away soon though! After I left the doctor's office today I stopped by Jack's (had about an hour to kill before class.) We hung out for a little bit but when I tried to eat I got sick all over again. I wound up taking a nap there (was exhausted) for a few hours and just going to class late since we were having a lab day. I got sick once at school and once on the way home.
Hopefully now that I'm home it'll settle down a bit. My doctor thinks I should be over it in the next week or two, so that's good at least; the sooner the better!

As far as my heart goes- I had an EKG done today and he has ordered an echocardiogram to be done on Monday morning. He's concerned about some changes with my heart function, so the tests are to err on the side of caution. I've also had no improvement with the constant fatigue, chest pains, and vertigo spells....he thinks my nervous system is just hay wire. (I have dysautonomia). He started me on another medicine for my heart rate and I go back in a month to see him. Could you guys spare some vibes it's nothing bad and that the medicine helps?

I hope all of you who are sick start to feel better soon!!

Did you ever check out those dys forums I suggested months ago?
This one at least.

Sorry to hear it's a virus. It really varies with me on how bad they'll hit me. I often wonder if I should have called off my TTT because I had the flu at the time - now I'm certain if I had waited they would have seen the 60 bpm increase at tilt instead of the constant higher HR from a low fever.

I hope your echo is fine. What showed weird on the EKG? While it doesn't sound normal, for a lot of us it is normal for our hearts to show strain during EKGs. Lots of people with dys report it.
Apparently it has to do with our hearts not filling.

Keep hydrated.

I sure did!
Thankyou!

He wound up diagnosing me for certain with Dysautonomia a good while ago. We traced things back and my sister and grandmother on my paternal side have since been to their doctors...we think an entire line of my family has Dysautonomia. We've all 3 had a diagnosis of it from different physicians. (I'm 1/2 Ashkenazi Jew -so that's not uncommon given my heritage.) The main issues with my heart are the Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (IST) and the Vasovagal Scnope. I'm also having a few other issues with my heart as well so he's trying to figure out the best course of action. Heart issues are definitely common with Dysautonomia patients unfortunately, but he thinks there may be something else going on so we'll see. Hopefully it's nothing bad though and he's just being cautions. (Congestive Heart Failure runs in my family, so I think he wants to make sure nothing is going on with me in that department. I doubt it's anything too serious, but I'd rather him be safe than not, and miss something.)

He didn't specify about the EKG today other than he wanted an Echo. done first thing Monday morning. I'm not sure what his concern was, but I'm sure he's just being cautious. I felt to horrible to think to even ask him at the time. (My main focus was not vomiting on him during my check up
). I go in for my echo on Monday afternoon, then if all is ok, I see my doctor again in 1 month for another checkup (a month to give new the medicine time to get into my system).

Just so you know, the familial dysautonomia associated with Ashkenazi is different than the other more common type of dys. It's a death sentence, ours is not. Just like MSA (shy-drager) is much different (again, that type kills).

And yeah, my mother has symptoms, too. I suspect that if she stops smoking her low blood pressure will hit her worse then it does already.

My GP always acts weird when he listens to my heart.
I guess it sounds weird to him, though my cardiologist and other docs weren't worried.

Do you have sinus tach laying down? I've always read it as IST happens regardless of position. If you only get tach when upright (like I do) than it's just postural. And did your doctor ever check your catecholamines during tilt?

I hope your echo goes well and that your med agrees with you. Too many of us are drug sensitive, so if anything feels "off" don't wait it out.

ETA: Forgot to mention. A lot of us on a couple of forums can trace quite a bit of our ancestry back to Northern Europe/Scandinavian countries (pale skinned, blond, blue or green eyes). I have some Danish on my mother's side, for example. No one is really sure what it's about other than higher incidence of some genetic diseases.

Nikki, I was totally going to start this thread Tuesday. I've had a horrible stomach ache, no vomiting, I managed to talk myself out of that. But my stomach just HURT. And no one I knew had anything like it. But I did just find out some people at work who work an opposite shift had it too so, at least I wasn't being poisoned, LOL. Too much CSI.

I've been dealing with a stomach virus, and today a sinus infection kicked in. But I can't complain too much, because I rarely ever get sick.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Well, today was definitely not an improvement.
I've been getting sick every few hours so needless to say, nothing got done today other than a little studying online. I had grand plans of running errands (red cross for Haiti, etc) and going to class today- unfortunately I didn't think it was safe to drive though (still vomiting and having bad dizzy spells) so I haven't made it past the couch. I made the STUPID decision to order lunch today as I didn't feel up to cooking and I was getting sick of eating saltines...big mistake....my pizza only lasted 5 minutes before I was sick.
(i've been living on soup and the tea my SS sent me all week...thought I'd be brave and order "real food"...apparently it was not smart! I feel soo dumb for doing that).

I'm familiar with the difference as far as Dysautonomia goes; that being said, I really do appreciate your help! (I've done quite a bit of research, and I also have recieved a lot of information from a medical standpoint too as i'm in med school.) That being said, there are many disorders linked to Ashkenazi Jews and that heritage as well as multiple types of Dysautonomia linked to it as well.

If you're worried about your mom- when she stops smoking- there is a medication (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but I can ask) that they can give her to help with her blood pressure levels if she tends to have it on the lower side. It should help even things out for her.

As far as the IST goes, my doctors have checked all of my levels/etc and have run quite a bit of tests. It happens when I'm laying down or exercising. It happens reguarldess of time of day or what I'm doing and I never know when I'm going to have a spell. That's just the tip of the iceburg for me though unfortunately.

Aww I'm sorry you're sick too. It's no fun at all.
There is definitely something going around though. My doctor told me I was the 6th person he had seen this week with the same thing and that it would probably be a few days to another week before I was 100%. When I talked to Jack earlier he told me that his aunt had the same thing a few weeks ago (I had forgotten) and that some of his faimly's been sick too..so I guess it's just going around. Unfortunately when other people get mild symptoms, I tend to get the worst symptoms (crappy immune system). / I'm glad you weren't being poisioned though lol!!
I needed a good laugh. Feel better!!

I know. There would be issues with drug interactions with her other meds, if she were to try them. The one I take, for example, can cause issues with a lot of meds because it's a 2D6 inhibitor.

Have you thought about going and getting fluids? If you call your doctor you might be able to do it there instead of in the ER. I can't say that it "wouldn't hurt", because it always does, but at least it would be something simple to try.

Fluids and a test to check my potassium levels are definitely in order if I don't feel better soon! (Already talked to my doctor about that one when I was in yesterday.) I've been really good about drinking water/pedialyte/etc so I will hopefully not dehydrate and raise my heart rate up, but if I get sick enough that won't be adequate so I may go get an IV if I need one. If this keeps up though, my family physician's office is open on Saturdays, so I can go in tomorrow after class if I need to.
