and this seems to be a bad one

Yesterday there was what looked to be a peace of poop stuck in one of his back claws, in between his toes, he was annoyed by it, trying to get it off. I tried to see what it was, it smelled like poop, and looked like poop, so I left him to take care of it.

Today I saw him still annoyed by this toe, so as he was sleeping, I went to inspect... I found out my baby was hurt

I guess he was SO annoyed by it, that he took the poop AND THE CLAW with it
.

So, I took him to the bathroom do a good cleaning, and what I found out was not good...
There was still some of the darn poop in there, so I took it out first, of course - It was cemented with the litter; I can see how that can bother... On this one claw the was only the quick left! No claw at all! just the raw quick! It was swollen and started bleeding a little when I cleaned...
Three of his toes were very swollen - the area around the claw, the skin that hides the claw - very red and swollen.
He is walking normally, jumping, eating, etc, but he was crying the whole time I was cleaning his paw

I was able to clean very well with Bactine, and put neosporin on it.
Tomorrow I will go to he vet first thing in the morning, at 8 am, when they open...
I HATE HATE HATE HATE that my baby is hurt!
I feel so bad that I didn't clean his paw yesterday... I could have prevented this had I done that

Can you guys send him some vibes please?

Open the wine, start drinking, update

The vet was not open today, but luckily his wound was looking a bit better, so I decided to treat it on my own and wait until Monday, instead of taking him to the ER. I did research the subject, and it seems that this is a common injury, losing claws, and my research indicated that as long as it doesn't show signs of infection it is ok to treat at home...
Please PLEASE - if you do have experience on the field, and I am sure many of you do, please let me know...

So here is what I did today:
I closely inspected, and here is what I found:
He did indeed loose the whole Claw
The Quick today is not as raw, it already started to heal
. There was just a tiny little amount of blood today, a dot, when I cleaned his paw, compared to yesterday...
The toe is swollen and red, but not too much - he did feel pain when I cleaned...
The adjacent toes were not as swollen as yesterday, so, a good sign!
There is no sign of pus, and the toes, even though a little swollen they are not warm to the touch.
He walks normally.

So, I washed the wound very carefully with Hibiclens, and dried as much as I could... Of course I couldn't dry it completely...
Then I put Neosporin on it, covered with gauze, wrapped with a bandage, tape, and tubular dressing holder... It looks professional, and more importantly, it will keep it away from litter and poop... - See now why I am drinking wine?? This is Bugsy.... The boy who is impossible to pill... He is a tough tough guy...

He is not happy about it... He takes a step and shakes his leg, but has not tried to take it off yet, so that is good

He is walking, jumping, and doing everything normally - in fact he is right now on the top of the cat tree

Sorry for the long post...

Best wishes that the healing continues to go well, and that you can get into the vet early on Monday.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Lazlo must have "weak claws" on one paw or something, because he's lost two over the years. The first time we freaked when we saw spots of blood on the floor and finally figured out what caused it. Rushed him to the vet - who cleaned the wound and reassured us the claw would grow back. They didn't even wrap it - just told us to make sure we kept it clean.

Next time it happened, we just washed it (which he was NOT happy about!) - and we just kept it clean. Once again, the claw just grew back.

I'm sure he'll be fine! ...and his claw will grow back.

Ai guys, thank you so much.... after 2/3 bottle of wine, and your posts, I sure feel a whole lot better...
I was freaking out.... I didn't sleep.... Called and called the vet.... Left messages... nothing... Then called my dad... who told me to go to the pharmacy and get the bandage and more neosporyn, and preferably surgical wash which I chose hibiclens... Gauze... tape... and a bottle of wine

My poor baby...
Here is what it looks like:
Attachment 14176
I hear mixed opinions about covering up, so I am going to cover it today while it is very raw... And from tomorrow on I guess I am just going to keep washing with hibiclens 2x/day...
My poor baby!!!!

Oh no, I feel his pain!!!
Here is a story of human toe to tell him to make him feel better.
Two summers ago I was taking out the garbage, barefoot of course, like an idiot. ( I hate shoes) I somehow avoided all the glass and yuck around the dumpster only to smash my foot into a concrete parking divider. Almost sheared off my little toe. I hopped to my neighbor leaving quite the trail of blood. It was not pretty.
About 2 months went by, the top of my toe had gone purple and was dead. I could stick a pin in it, no feeling at all ( I don't recommed sticking pins in body parts)
I am a stubborn person, would not face the doctor, but knew I had to, to get the top of my toe cut off! I was sitting at the computer picking at it (also don't recomend picking at possibly septic body parts) and the whole thing peeled off EEEWWWW! But under the purple yuck new toe!!!
It was so weird, people aren't supposed to regenerate stuff, but there it was, new toe! Nail and all. looking pink and perfect like a baby's toes.
I almost kept the part that peeled off, but people told me that was just nasty.
So look forward to a new claw kitty cat!

I don't see any evidence that it would have been any different if you had messed with it right away. Don't blame yourself; this is the sort of thing that happens to cats on a regular basis.

It happened to Gus a few months ago. With in a few days the redness was gone and he was running every where.

Bitsy has pulled out a claw on 2 separate occasions. Both times they grew back with no problems and no vet intervention. For minor wounds there's really very little a vet can do. Just keep an eye on it for infection, but it should be fine.

IMO, don't cover it, more likely to cause infection to get worse if it's covered.

Many Bugsy's way!

Oh, poor Bugsy and poor Meowmy! I understand how you feel... I came in to blood on the foyer floor one morning and found that Prowler's ear had been torn, likely in rough play... it had been bitten! I had to soak off the scab and clean it and put Neo on it... the vet said to just keep an eye on it, keep it clean and if it got red and warm to come in immediately. I was shaking!! He was actually a very good boy about the whole thing.

Well,, several weeks later the ear is fine... except for a bit of damage.

This happened to Armani too (I later pulled the missing claw out of Kipper
). I tried to clean it but he's a very big cat and he quite obviously didn't want me anywhere near it, so I didn't have any luck. I did manage to squirt some Bactine on it from 5 feet away when he wasn't paying attention but that's the extent of what I could do for him. It healed up fine with no infection and grew right back. He didn't even limp after the first day.

You're doing great. If Armani healed with almost no medical attention whatsoever I think Bugsy will be all better in no time.

Bugsy's paw is so far healing up nicely, his toes are no longer swollen, are back the regular shade of pink, no longer bleeding, and his quick is not raw at all...
If I am not mistaken I saw a tiny little piece of claw coming out already - wow, could it be that fast?? Or is this wishful thinking on my part?
So, he was with his bandage yesterday for most of the day, but I took it out for the night...
Today no more Neosporin - Just Bactine in the AM and PM.
He is not limping, and his energy is 100% - jumping, playing chase, running his 18lbs up and down the cat tree and the kitty wall!
I know his paw hurts a bit because from time to time he will shake his leg as though he wants something to come out of it, but I think he is doing great!!!

Whew!

Aww, poor guy! Sounds like he's healing up good and fast already though, so that's good news!
Don't forget, bodies are resilient.

Still, continued for a complete recovery!

Poor little fella to have a sore toe but lucky guy to have such a fantastic Mum

Poppy, one of the moggies I live with, lost a claw when her two younger housemates had a mad half hour right over her while she was asleep. The force of her acceleration from fast asleep to frothing in the kitchen pulled the claw out on the carpet.

I don't know that it is wishful thinking that the claw sheath seems to be growing back already - I recall being astonished by how fast the little raw nub became a shiny (if very small) pointy claw.

As fast as their nails grow, yes, you can believe you're already seeing new nail!
I've had dog nail injuries. One of my boys split a nail and was in a great deal of pain...he turned out fine; then one of my girls LOST her whole nail and even the vet said it probably wouldn't come back...that didn't sound right to me, I thought it might. Sure enough!! She has all of her perfect claws, it came back right as rain!
