Minimum wage has gone up here, and I think its supposed to continue to go up, which is great....

It would be neat to compare.... I'll look for the thread I started once upon a time related directly to grocery costs as well as home costs instead of redoing one
When I lived in the US, I did a lot of comparisons. The cost of living is still cheaper in the US than it is in NZ.

I get dinged when I buy milk! I'm lactose intolerant and lactaid milk is almost $5.00 per 2 litres. Regular milk is 1/2 that price.
That's what I was thinking when I first read that - DH is lactose intolerant and the milk price are nasty...although I'm glad I don't have to buy it further north where my parents live. It's nearly $6 there so I guess it's just demand for the area you're in.

If you have a big grocery Walmart near you, that's where we get the lactose free milk because it's almost $1 cheaper.

I shop at Safeway because it's close and they offer home delivery. Though today I didn't get delivery and used a taxi to get home.

There are other stores that some claim are cheaper, but none are close to me or offer home delivery. Most of the time when I go shopping I have the groceries delivered because it's hard for me to carry up the bags.

I use a public transportation service that only allows me to bring back 2 bags that can sit comfortably on my lap. I'd have to go pretty much daily in order to get my groceries. That gallon of water, oranges and 2- 2 litres of milk were heavy and the cat food and cereal added huge bulk, so 2 bags with that stuff in would not sit comfortably on my lap in the front seat of a car.

To take a cab home from a Sobey's or a Walmart would eat up any savings that I did get (probably close to a $20.00 cab ride), and then I'd have to lug it all upstairs on my own and end up with a sore back in the end.

So unfortunately while Safeway can be a bit expensive on some things, I shop there due to the convenience it allows me.

I do look for deals and buy no-name stuff. The deli meats for example were on sale and each cost around $4.50. So $9.00 in deli meat will give me lunches all week long, much cheaper than buying lunch, even though it added to the grocery bill.

Spent 100.00 in the grocery today, mind, 40 was to fuel my addiction, and 15 was for someone else. So I spent 45.00 on a loaf of bread, a packet of hot dogs, 2 pounds (907gr) of coffee beans, a ready-made lasagna (I can't make one for 3.00), some liver sausage, 2l carton of 2% and a few odds and ends. But the cat food bill.....egads: large bag of dry food, and 14 tins for the barn kitties, 12 tins for the housecats, coffee creamer and advil for me, 76.00, oh and 'designer' popcorn and (bad me) some chocolate covered cherries.

No, there isn't much actual food there.

I have dried goods in the pantry such as rice and noodles, plus a variety of canned staples such as tomatoes, salmon/tuna, legumes etc. Plus I have a deep freezer that has some meats, veggies and ready to cook soup bases/kits that I put together. So I do actually have more food in the house than I listed above.

What I bought will last the week, with the cereal probably 2 weeks, and the dry cat food about 3 weeks.

I mainly needed breakfast and lunch type foods for work next week. The clinic I am going to be working in is in a large hospital the size of a university campus and the cafeteria is a long way from where I'm going to be working. With all the twists/turns/hallways, it equals about 3 or 4 city blocks one way! I'm not physically up to such a long trek at least not without sit down rest breaks, which would eat up my lunch break; making the trek entirely pointless!

We spend between 80 and 100 dollars every Saturday morning just at the farmer's market alone. Mind you, we eat very, very well compared to most folks.

We have little seasonal stands set up by local growers when in season. Depending on the time and day you can spend $5 and get a lot of stuff, sometimes they'll give stuff out for free because they don't want it to spoil.
But I live in a rural area where demand is lower because some people still think those veggies aren't as high quality.
Or people grow their own/have friends that do.

IMO, it's just not worth it! You've got a few items on there that are expensive...the salmon, mandarin oranges, and what I can only assume is extremely Special K.

Deli meat is also horribly expensive. I only buy it if it's on special, and some turkey goes on pretty good sale here.

How big is the difference between American currency & Canadian currency? Or is it the same?

8.99 for Special K? That is ridiculous.. Unless there is a big difference in currency. I usually shop at Walmart and the cereal there is pretty cheap compared to that.

Currently the Canadian dollar is trading at .933166 USD

There are no Walmarts near to where I live. I take public transportation and all of the stores here are out in the boonies and not easy to get to.

That was for a jumbo box. The smaller box was $3.00 cheaper I think. The other things you pointed out were on sale. A large bag of the oranges was the same price as a bag of navel oranges, which was cheaper than buying the oranges per kilogram. The mandarins were also buy one, get one free. The salmon was about $1.50 off each tin. I never buy salmon or tuna unless it's on sale.

Oh I'm not saying you shouldn't have bought them. They're just not things that I would like enough to spend that kind of money on is all. I've just never seen a box of cereal here for $9.00, regardless of the size. I find that shocking.

It is shocking. And that's not even the most expensive cereal either. Stuff like Muslix are even more for smaller boxes. I just love Special K Red Berries. It's the only cereal that I eat.

Cereal is overly expensive up here for what it is, but the jumbo box here, I have never paid $9 for and I wouldnt buy it if it was $9. My local supermarket has the jumbo Special K for $5.99, but its up to 50c cheaper in other stores but they are further and other stuff isnt as cheap.

I rarely buy deli meat as its so expensive, I just buy a cheap roast and some chicken and cook on the weekend using leftover meat for lunches

Boy, that cereal is expensive! It's the same here though, a regular sized box of say, Froot Loops, is something like $4.00.

Check you local Co-op grocery flyer fro this week, Moz. Kellogs cereals are a tofer but I can't remember two for what...only cereals I eat are almost never on sale but maybe this week as selected Post cereals are cheaper too. I am also betting on lots of manager's specials on deli meats, assorted snacks and all things suitable for party trays since we are off to the Grey Cup and that means volume sales for Cup parties. I think those kind of specials are going to be in almost every store this week though
