Cereal's expensive. I've been trying to stay away from it lately. At least you got some cat food. I spend around $85 per week on food just for myself and come away "without a whole lot" it feels.
(I like health food) It's a bit depressing.

That happens to us every time we come home from the grocery store
. We open the fridge a day or two later and have to ask "where is the food!?".

We're getting a 1/6th cow from our neighbour in another month or so which should help allot. The price of meat these days is just OUTRAGEOUS!!! (and I'm talking the cheap cuts!!)

I guess the cost of living is high where you are!
Yeah, it's high, but not the highest in Canada.

I get dinged when I buy milk! I'm lactose intolerant and lactaid milk is almost $5.00 per 2 litres. Regular milk is 1/2 that price.

Lactose free milk is so expensive! Linda, I buy it in bags of 3 fo about $8. Do they have that there? It will save you a couple of bucks at least. I just pop the bags in the freezer.

Things like condiments add up but they last for a long time, and meat from the deli can be expensive, as well as fresh and not pre-bagged produce.

In my experiences, Safeway is not my favorite place to shop because their prices are so much higher than Kroger or Wal-Mart.

Just don't buy their collard greens... http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/281592

That is rather expensive. I do understand that Canada's cost of living is quite high, same goes for NZ.

I reckon cereal is too expensive - I can't believe the prices when we buy it for my son. I don't eat cereal myself, the only cereal I will eat is porridge (oatmeal?) to you guys.

I find it ridiculous that vegetables and especially fruit is expensive - they should be cheaper to encourage us to buy them!!!

I have this notion (true? false? i have no idea) that the cereal companies make a lot of money because, well, look at what they charge; and kids ask for them. and to think - it's just grain!

I noticed myself choosing plain oats ("Quaker Oats") the last few times for financial reasons.
So I save some $$ but give up the crunchy goodness of cold cereal

It is probably true. Quaker Oats is what I eat - and I actually like it.
I just add raisins and brown sugar to spruce up the taste.

I think I have it pretty good where I live in Wisconsin. We have alot of grocery stores locally so there is a fair amount of competition to keep prices low. Plus being America's dairyland dairy products are always very reasonable though I did see butter jumped up to $1.89/pound. When I visit my sister in Virginia I notice that the prices are alot higher for just about everything.

What you paid $89 for I would pay way less than half that.

yeah that's bad. in the U.S. there is no place that can even remotely compare to walmart. I've gone to other stores, and on some things, it's not just a few cents cheaper, it's DOLLARS cheaper.

I don't ever shop at Walmart (don't care for their business practices) but the grocery store I shop at I bet matches or beats Walmarts prices. In fact my boss picks up supplies at this store because he would pay more buying these items through a wholesale supplier.

.

I don't know if it will be Canada-wide but there is a lot of talk about a price war. PC (Loblaws) has already lowered their prices apparently and Walmart as well. Considering the Canadian Business magazine reported the Weston Family as being the second (?) wealthiest family in Canada, I suppose they can afford to lower their prices.

Its definately expensive up here....( northern ON. ) I've been shopping with my friend a couple times, just for some light groceries and I've found that on average the prices here are about double what I pay. Some sale items are = to what I pay reg. price at home ( southwestern ON.)

It all varies on the area
I find my area to be quite reasonable.... next time I shop, I'll make a list to show
Mind you, once you do currency exchange, that may be a different story.

Yeah, but when you consider the pay rate, etc, it is still expensive.

Is it? I have no idea what normal pay rates are where you are..... But I don't think my area specifically is bad for cost of living
Minimum wage has gone up here, and I think its supposed to continue to go up, which is great....

It would be neat to compare.... I'll look for the thread I started once upon a time related directly to grocery costs as well as home costs instead of redoing one
