I just bought this to try it for my kitties because I want them to have the best nutrition they can and I read a lot of good things about it. My question is, when I opened the bag the food had a very strong fishy smell to it. Is this normal? I have never bought this kind before so I don't know if it normal for these foods to smell so strong. Its the Chicken kind.

Thanks

I never used, but that should be normal... There are a bunch of grain free, high protein foods that are the same way - you will get used to it soon.
I had the same feeling with Wellness Core and Orijen.
Now, if the food smells off, rancid, or if it is moldy, then throw it away; don't risk it. Fishy is normal though...

check the ingredients ... if fish is one of the first four this would be normal otherwise I suggest taking it back as that can be a sign of rancidness

Thanks again everyone, I was definitely wanting to get away from the overprocessed, gluten filled foods that are so common and I spent some time reading and looking into the different foods. Orijen was my first choice but I couldn't find it in any pet store here. I will see how they do with this one and if I find they don't like it I will look online for a place to buy Orijen.

I just found this website that carries Orijen.
http://www.tailwaggerspets.com/

I personally haven't bought from this website before, but the free shipping on orders over $80 deal sounds great.

Right now I made a huge mistake by buying a the biggest bay of Royal Canin kitten at the pet store because the shelter told me to. But when I finish that bag (maybe even sooner), I will look into Orijen and will probably buy from that site.

It is readily available where I am. However, I've had reports of cats developing scabs from eating Orijen. My crew do not like it at all.

Can you please show me these reports of scabs? I have never heard about it?
My cats have been eating it for a long time, not only they love it, but it has been great for them too. I also know of other members here who feed Orijen, and have never heard of this before...

IMO that cat could have a food allergy to an ingredient in the food, and that could be anything. For example: Bugsy has diarrhea when he eats the regular Orijen, because he is allergic to chicken; so... we feed our babies Orijen 6-fish. IMHO it is unfair to generalize a brand of food because of one undiagnosed case (that sure sounds like food allergies to me).
Bugsy is allergic to any type of chicken in any brand of food, be it in wet, dry, raw... and I am not going to blame the food for it
