I used to live in NY and now live in New Jersey, the only disaster is when the fire alarm goes off by accident! So I guess I'm lucky in that sense.

A couple years ago there was a tornado about a mile and a half from where we lived. As far as I know, though, this town has never been hit - certain towns never are due to how they "lay".

I guess for us it was a few years ago when a "mini tornado" blew across our neighbourhood. It took down quite a few large, old (50+ years) trees and caused some roof damage here and there. DH and were hunkered down in the basement with the kitties while it blew over - that was scary enough for me and I don't ever want to be in a real one!!!

ETA: I just remembered the cyclone we got caught in in Fiji last year! That was mostly three days of boredom as we were stuck in a hostel waiting for the flooding to subside so we could leave. The storm was pretty intense, but not really frightening.

As Trout's Mom said we don't really have weather issue's such as Hurricane here in Ontario. We do have some wicked Thunderstorms that can lead to Tornado's but they are usually further south then where I live. We do also get some really nasty blizzards in the winter but again if your prepared they certainly aren't life threatening. I guess Forest Fires would have to be the most likely Natural Disaster I would have to deal with.

Last December we had an ice storm. I was lucky and only lost power for a few minutes. Other people that I work with were without power for days.

It was not so bad in the city where I live. Some lost power for a day or so. Most of the damage was from tree branches that fell.

Some places that are in the country lost power for over a week. I am so happy to live in the city.

The only real threat here is tornadoes, but the last one to hit our city was back in '75 I think...before I was born.

In '97 we had a huge ice storm that took out the power in 1/2 the city for about a week and we lost a bunch of trees. That's about it, though.

I was in danger of a natural menance last week when I ran out of cat food!

Sorry just joking...Ummm nothing really we get alot of snow in hte winter...and I think the last time it was a real danger was 4 years ago where a tornado was in the path of the school where I worked. We evacuated the school it was pretty scary. Ironicy the tornado did not touch down anywhere NEAR the school rather it went up MY road and blew right past my apartment. I have friends who watched the tornado breeze on by from a coffee shop.

Thankfully since i'm ontop of the hill we only lost power for a few days and had a few trees knocked down. My cats were terrified and Tilly was even more so sincei only had her for few weeks when it happened. As it was as I was driving up to my apartment after being released from school (since all my students were picked up) my friend called me and begged me to pick her up since the trains stopped and she was stuck on hte platform. So i got her and thanks to that I missed the tornado. If she didn't call I would have driven right into it!!

Anyway the cats and I packed up locked the apartment and headed up to my parent's where they had power and we stayed there for a few days until power was restored.

December 20, 1977, we were hit with a BIG dust storm. High winds with lots of brown dust. My mom took the bus home from work and when she came in, her face was black with dust. Her glasses protected her eyes, and when she took them off, there was a big ring of dust around them

We were without power for several hours because of the dust and high winds. I went to my boyfriend's house since he had power, and called my mom periodically to tell her what they were saying on the news.

A couple of years later, after I met my DH, he told me that dust had even filtrated in where he worked at the hospital. There was even dust in surgery!

I live in 'tornado alley', so that's the biggest natural threat we face. A small twister skipped thru our end of town 2 years ago, taking a roof here and there and twisting trees. Our town has warning sirens, but I don't think anyone is ever actually evacuated. We're told to get to an interior room of the house or the basement.

We also are in a direct line from the New Madrid Fault, but far enough away that we don't really experience much when it acts up. In fact, several years ago there was a quake that was strong enough to send shock-waves our way and I had no clue that it had happened until people were asking, "Did you feel the earth quake?"

I have been fortunate to avoid the worst of the tornados, earthquakes, flash flooding, blizzards, and straight line winds that can occur here.

I guess the worst would be when Dad, Mom, and I were heading home in a blizzard back the late 1970s. A normally 30-45 minute drive took over 2 hours. At every stop light I was getting out to clear the headlights, taillights, and back window of our car.

The last time I recall a bad hurricane was Hurricane Floyd in 1999 when I lived in New Jersey. I actually went out and played in the rain for awhile
They closed most everything down that day and the following day for clean up - lots of trees fell, a couple power lines, branches everywhere. The power went out on the top half of our street for a week (but the rest of us had it still).

Living in Charleston now though, and it being 20 years since Hurricane Hugo, we're about due for a hit.

flash flooding
I'd forgotten about the flooding, but then again, we live on a bluff so we really don't have to worry about being flooded out. There are occasions when the bridges across the Mississippi are closed because one end is under water. That's a huge headache for people that commute between Illinois and Missouri for work.
When the river is acting up there are evacuations up and down the length of it. Sandbagging is almost a recreational activity here in the spring.

Nothing here really in the last 4 years. We're a couple hours from the coast so hurricanes aren't usually a threat.

Before I moved here, I lived in Oklahoma and tornadoes were always a possibility. I'm terrified of them.
