How much do you spend on scoopable litter?

Those of you who buy scoopable litter: how much do you spend per cat per month?

Please answer in US dollars if possible.

It would also be helpful if you could give how many pounds of litter/cat/month, as well as the brand of litter. Thanks!

Around $9 for four large litter boxes (around 40lbs) for the adult cats and $15 (45lbs) for the kittens' litter box. I'll be glad when I can get the kittens off of clay.

ETA: I use chicken crumbles for the adult cats' boxes. It does clump.

About $12 for a 40 lb bucket from Sam's Club.

I go thru a 40 pound bag of Cat Attract and a large bin (28 lbs?) every other week. With 10 cats using the boxes, that comes to about $7.50 per cat per month. If I guessed low, which I probably did, it's probably more like $10 per month per cat.

I use clay litter. 100 pounds lasts me about 6 weeks, and costs about $12 every six weeks. 3 cats. Hmm...so that would be $2 a week....$8 a month divided by three cats, so about $2.66 a month per cat for clay litter.

I have four litter boxes, and scoop at least four times a day, and dump and scrub weekly.

I realize you wanted clumping litter stats, but felt like posting anyway.

We use the 17lb bags of (corn) original WBCL @ approximately $20 a bag, without a coupon....
usually about 1 1/2 bags a month.

Swheat Scoop at 14 pounds for just under $11. When there is a sale, it's $9. I buy two bags every month. I'd buy the larger bag but I have neither a car nor space in the apartment to store it.

Yes, clumping litter was what I meant...I guess people scoop non-clumping litter, too...I've never bought it, so I don't really know. But by "scoopable" I meant "clumping".

Interesting answers so far...

I use Dr. Elseys Precious cat litter - 1 40lb bag about $18-20, per month, for the three cats combined.

I buy various brands. The unscented store brand I'm currently liking is $5 for 20 pounds. I also like Special Kitty clumping, and that's $6-98-$7.98 (depending on scent) for 27 pounds.

I don't ever dump the litter (well, very rarely anyway), but of course after scooping it runs low and needs to be replenished. Probably averaging about one box a week.

So I guess we'll say it's around $10 per week for me.

I didn't realise you meant clumping litter - I wouldn't touch clumping litter if you paid me. It's really a big no no, here.

I converted the amount I spend on litter for a month for six cats and it's around US $40.

I use OzPet wood pellets, $17.50/month ($16US) for 5 cats.

I buy Tidy Cats Scoop and usually stock up when it's on sale. I buy 2-3 buckets a month for about $22 ( 2 35-38 lb buckets) to $33 (3 big buckets).

I have 3 cats and 5 litterboxes. The boxes are all on a different changing schedule. I scoop 2-3 times a day. And dump & scrub them once a month (but since they are all on a different schedule I don't do all each month). I've found since I started using so many boxes they don't get dirty as fast. Now that we have a house I can do this. I have 4 in the basement and 1 upstairs.

Do you never wash the litterbox?

I change the litter out completely and wash/scrub the litter boxes about every six weeks and just top up in between. I buy 4 30 lb. bags of litter per year at $44 per bag which comes to about $12 per month CDN and would be about $11.50 US per month. That's for 2 litter boxes.

I do....when the boxes get low, I pour one box into another one (or 2 or 3), and wash the empty box. That way there's one (or sometimes 2) fresh box a week. So each box gets washed out about once every 12 weeks. So I do "dump" the litter, but only into other litterboxes, not into the garbage. Plenty of litter is removed from regular scooping, though. My garbage cans weigh a ton....poor trash collectors!

I will dump the litter in the garbage if the litter isn't scooping well anymore or if it still smells bad after scooping and putting it into a clean box. Clumping litter lasts a surprisingly long time if scooped regularly and the box is clean.

Where is the I don't want to know option?

That's about what I pay. I get mine at BJ's Wholesale Club, but over the summer there were several good deals at Target (like buy 2 and get a $5 gift certificate which I would use on the next sale.) Right now I have 2 litter boxes for 4 cats and a bucket lasts almost 2 weeks.

I wash the litter boxes (all at once) every once and a while, and I usually don't get rid of the old litter. Last time I did it, I figured I would start over with completely fresh litter...until I realized just how many pails of litter it would take to refill all the boxes. I couldn't afford all that (partly what motivated me to start this thread)! So only one litter box got all-new litter.

Actually, I noticed that, over time, used litter loses its "dusty-ness". The litter box with all-new litter created a lot more dust than the ones with used litter. The cats mostly used the used-litter box rather than the new-litter box. Interesting!

I appreciate everyone's answers to the poll. I might just look into some of the litters you've mentioned.

Fresh Step 20lb box.

3 cats, 1xmonthly, $12. Sometimes I can get a sale for $7

But I can get away with one box. If I had to use more boxes it would be more.

I usually get the 27lb Tidy Cats Instant Action formula which runs at about $12-$14 dollars. Probably use 2 a month. I usually change the 2 litterboxes once every 2 weeks, add litter every 3-4 days.

Im psycho obsessive about my litter boxes because if they start to smell Bf gets on his tirade about how the cats smell and he doesnt need that crap..(yes he is a grumpy old man at 28)...But I get the Special Kitty clumping kind and I get the biggest box I can and generally 2 at a time..And I need about 4 a month because Im always refilling the boxes and washing them out and all that annoying good stuff for them. Since I have to vacumn their room out every other day anyways I always try and keep their boxes super fresh and clean so Im not getting yelled at...

Hmmm....I figure 100 lbs for my indoor cats (fosters not included) at about $25 (on a good sale). That covers 7 cats...so about $3.60/cat for a week...which comes to almost $15/cat for litter in a month. I can't mess with changing litters much, as Margo has no problem with going on the floor if she doesn't like the litter. I mix litters together (Arm & Hammer mixed with Tidy Cats), so I can add in a bit of something else in to see if she'll use it. I just now got her to settle on using the box OK so I'm hesitant to mess with things!

$7 for the bentonite for the "Retirement Community" in the enclosure lasts 2 weeks for 3 cats...they also have outdoor access in which to go potty. About $4.60 in litter for them a month.

Foster kitties come & go - and depending on the age they are I use Swheat or scoopable clay. I only use non-scoopable clay if they have something (like coccidia or giardia).

$16.99 CAD monthly for a bag of Dr. Elsey's.

So i always round up when it comes to money...lol so i opted for the $10-$15 a month per cat. I use Worlds Best Cat Litter and have 3 Litter Robots and 1 regular litter pan. My hubby has allergies so I'm neurotic about clean litter boxes. I use between 50-70lbs of litter a month, once a month I empty all litter boxes and give them a clean(it takes about 36#s to refill all litter boxes). WBCL also offers coupons after collecting 9 UPC's which is always a help.

wow i never thought about this before.....i spend a lot of money on litter lol
post #25 of 26
$36 CAD for the large bag of WBCL (I think 34lbs) between 5 cats approx every three weeks.

So $12 a week between 5 cats, approx $10 each cat per month

I've been using FreshAire, which is a combination of clay and pine. It clumps hard and kills odor without added fragrances, which I like since I am allergic. I buy it at Petsmart for $12/20 lb. - FreshAire has a new litter coming out with added cedar. I can't wait to try that one. Oh, yeah, my cat likes it too.
