From what I'm reading, you can get unlocked iPhones in Canada, but not the US. Does anyone know if this is true? Do you need a Canadian shipping/billing address?

My aunt lives in Thailand and wants a 32GB iPhone, but she can't get one there, so I'm trying to see if I can get one for her.

Any help would be appreciated

I don't have one of those. My phone is just a basic one. I did find this at Wikipedia:

While the iPhone was initially sold on the AT&T network only with a SIM lock in place, various hackers have found methods to "unlock" the phone from a specific network.

Although AT&T is the only authorized iPhone carrier in the United States, unlocked iPhones can be used with an unauthorized carrier after unlocking.

More than a quarter of the original iPhones sold in the United States were not registered with AT&T. Apple speculates that they were likely shipped overseas and unlocked, a lucrative market prior to the iPhone 3G's worldwide release.

Unlocking iPhones in the U.S. is done because many would-be users dislike switching carriers or consider AT&T's monthly fees too expensive.

You can get an unlocked iphone in the US too. You can buy it and then take it to whatever dealer of cell phone service and they will unlock it for you. You can get it with T mobile and verizon but not with sprint though- it has to be one of the providers who use SIM cards. Once you unlock it though you cannot get new software updates.
It is all BS!! I hate AT&T. They also block certain functions because they are losers..lol

But you're still locked into a plan though right? If I bought it through AT&T wouldn't I still have to pay monthly fees?

You can buy a phone from a store without locking it into a plan but you pay the $600 type prices rather than the $149 you pay with a plan and while they are unlocked it usually says unlocked - works with x and x networks so some networks will not allow the phone to be used.

Thanks Eithne, that's what I'm after - it's for my aunt in Thailand, and she's looked into it and knows she can do it, she just wants the phone, and doesn't want to pay the exorbitant prices Australia charges (where she's visiting soon).

If you are going to buy an unlocked phone I wouldnt do it thru AT&T they are rip offs. I got a Pantech Duo back when they first came out and had AT&T unlock it so I could use it with my new provider and when they did it it ended up only unlocking texting and I couldnt answer the phone or call out with it. When I called back to ask them to give me to rest of the unlock code they said that they couldnt do it...Its a bunch of crap. I know people who have gone on Ebay and gotten unlocked phones and have worked well...

As for using an unlocked phone with a carrier that uses sim cards..Verizon does not use sim cards and if it has to be used with the card I dont see how you can use Verizon...Thats who my cell provider is now and I will do without the Iphone because Verizons plans and costs are awesome and they arent a rip off plus out here I get 20 times better service than every other provider in our area!!!
