Well its been a week since we got Lucy (4 month old Kitten) and Carly (2 yr. old) is very afraid of the kitten. Today she saw Lucy through the sliding glass door and just hissed once - major improvement! The last two times she immediately bolted to the back door and we let her out and she stayed outside all night once and all outside day another (she is usually in most of the day). Another day she stayed on a towel by the back door all day and didn't leave to come to bed until after midnight. She doesn't want to go past the kittens door to get to our door. This is going pretty well, right?

The problem is if we walk past Carly, especially anywhere near the hall, she goes crazy and and will "attack" a leg. or if we go to pick her up she "attacks" our arms. I say "attacks", because she uses her claws, but not all the way. She hurts us, but does't cause us to bleed, Mostly we get really scared because she's hissing and growling, and our friend just got carved up by her cat needing many stitches. So is this ok behavior or should we be worried. We don't have any money at this point for Feliway and rescue remedy type things. I plan to get them in the future, but now, it's not happening.

Next, the kitten is play biting and scratching and I don't want that to become a problem. It hurts when she does it, but no blood. She constantly mouths us, but too hard. Is this teething behavior? My other cat didn't do this, and we didn't even know she was teething. Whats the deal?

Thanks for your replies...

Try mixing their scents in safe areas (so rub Lucy down with a towel and then put that towel under Carly's food bowls so she learns that the scent wont hurt her). It should help with Carly's stress level too and maybe she will stop the attacks, but try to reassure her and spend time with her without the kitten so she knows you still love her too.

As for the mouthing, lots of kittens do it while teething but make sure that you say no so they 'get' that its not good behaviour

Thanks. I have been trading scents and Carly seems used to it. I am afraid that Carly will remain afraid or hurt Lucy once I get them together. I have let them see each other 3 times now and every time Carly get more afraid, so I am just giving it a rest.

Thanks again for replying!
