Hey everyone my kitten is about 6 months now..... just today a few hours ago he started to lick his lips alot more than ever and its as if there is somthing wrong. Ive looked in his mouth to see if i can see anything wrong and it all looks okay. Someone told me he could be teething but I dont know about that. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this and also how old are they when they start to teeth and lose teeth? Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you so much all!!!

My kittens are going through the same thing. I noticed Sasha licking a lot when one of her fangs fell out. This is about the age they start to loose their baby teeth.

It could be that or it could be that something has made your kitten nauseous. If you've ever had problems with nausea or been about to vomit you may have noticed you'll get more saliva in your mouth - cats will have the same problem.

If his teeth and mouth look fine it could have been something he ate or maybe even licked around the house. Double check to make sure nothing dangerous or any questionable house plants are out.

From The Cornell Book of Cats
Adult Teeth (age=when teeth break through)
Center (4) Incisors (front teeth between the canines) 3-1/2 to 4 months (14-16 weeks)
Outer Incisors (still between the canines) 4 to 4-1/2 months (16-18 weeks)
Canines 5 months
Upper molars (called a premolar) 4-1/2 to 6 months (depending on tooth)
Lower molars (called a premolar) 5-6 months for all
Upper molar in back, no baby tooth, just the molar at 4-5 months
If his gums are sticky...as opposed to slick, it could be a sign of dehydration.

ok i felt his gums.... i cant really tell if they are sticky or not.... he has been drinkin the normal amount of water as what he usually drinks and hes eaten a lil bit less but still is eating majority of his food..... i felt all his teeth and dont feel anything loose in there or anything and he doesnt seem to be doing the licking thing as much now just a few hours later than before when i originally posted.... but what do you mean by if they are sticky? like i said i felt them and i think they feel pretty wet for gums but not really sticky.... maybe a lil more of a slimey feel (not in a gross or bad way) just more slimey than sticky i guess if that makes any sense lol? thanks again everyone!!!

He may have lost one of his baby teeth, or he may have eaten something that disagreed with him, or he may have a hairball getting ready to come up.

Look at his canines (fangs). Don't be surprised if you see any one of the front four "doubled," that is, a larger one next to a smaller one. That's what happens when they lose their baby teeth. And it usually happens at about 6 months.

You can hope! Others can tell you how to cut down on that, but the #1 way is not let them see your hand as a toy.

I brought in a feral 8-10 month old female last Fall, and within weeks had her spayed. Following the surgery, she hid anywhere she could find in her room, and every time I could catch a glimpse of her, she was licking her lips. I even posted on here about it.

I assume it was because she was in pain; she seemed to take way longer to recover than the female (not feral) I had spayed in 1988. I felt so bad for her. Sometimes I still see her do it when she's a little nervous (and that is much of the time, that's why we call her Scaredy.)

Our Bijou was a little biter when he was a baby but fortunately grew up to be a real gentleman.
My ankles looked like I had been in a cat fight myself.

Get some of those fat plastic straws and toss a few around for the kitty to chew on. It helps with the teething and when one gets a bit chewed up, toss it out and give kitty some more.

As for the biting, hiss loudly at him when he bites. If he starts to bite, stop dead in your tracks (if you move he'll think you are playing chase with him), hiss at him or yell ouch very loud. Never use your hands as a plaything. You can use a wand with a toy or some such thing but never your hands. It will take some patience and you must be consistent but it will yield results. Our Bijou is very gentle and doesn't bite or scratch no matter what I have to do with him.
