I've had two cats for about a year, and one of them is very friendly and sociable and loves people, while the other one is totally scared of anyone and anything other than me. I had house guests stay here for a week and the scared one stayed in my room for the week. That was fine until they left. Now they've been gone for a week and she refuses to come out to the main room and the kitchen where I give them food. Before this she spent time wandering around the house normally without much fear.

So I'm wondering what I can do to make her willing to spend time outside of my bedroom. I've considered a couple of different things. First I know if I lock her out, she will hide under the couch (for days on end if need be) or will come to my door and whine until I open it.

I really want her to return to her normal personality. She's always been skittish but this obsessive fearfulness wasn't a problem except for the past week and earlier when I had a christmas tree in the house. Has anyone been able to successfully expand their cat's territory?

My aunt had the reverse problem. When I came to stay with her for a while, her cat slept with me while I was there and wouldn't let her make up the bed for about a week later.

Keep trying treat bribes and wet food. Once their smell has faded more and your cat realizes they're gone for good she should calm down a little.

I've never heard of a cat being afraid of a christmas tree. Most of us have the opposite problem and have to remove a cat from the tree.

You could always try some feliway diffuser plug-ins.
