Both of my cats have pancreatitis. They are a year and a half old and litter mates. They take a ton of medication including Metronidazole (1/2 tablet every 24 hours. Get #2 empty gel capsules from your vet and put it in a gel cap and pill your cat. They will not taste the bitterness therefore will not vomit from the taste or foam at the mouth. My kitties also take two anti nausea meds (Ondansetron and Cerenia, along with famotidine which is Pepcid AC, 1/4 of a Valium as an appetitive stimulant, vitamin B12 shots once a week, Fortiflora and Cosequin every night. Their appetites are terrible and I worry constantly. But no more vomiting or diarrhea. I am feeding baby food but they are not eating much at all. I have done syringe feeding but they hate it. I am at my wits end and wondered if there are suggestions out there for me.
Thanks,

What are you feeding them, besides baby food? Have you ever thought about trying a raw diet for them?

Numerous high end cat foods, the next day they won't touch them. I am frustrated and worried. I tried one freeze dried raw diet and they ate a little one meal and like all refused to touch it again. FreshPet Vital is now the food of the hour but they will only eat tiny amounts. They don't come near the 200 calories that the vet wants them to eat.

Hi all,

As far as needing to administer Metronidazole, I put a half a pill in an empty gel cap that I purchased from my veterinarian, this way the pill doesn't dissolve in the cat's mouth and the cat won't taste the bitter taste that this medicine has, thus no vomiting (from the pill).

An update on my cats who have pancreatitis. They are currently off of all medication.  They take a good pure probiotic, GI support (homeopathic), and a raw pancreatic enzyme twice a day. it has been about a month and they are now eating on their own. I no longer syringe feed.  My one male eats great and is putting on weight, the other one is eating but smaller amounts and continues to vomit once or twice a week but is still much improved. I found rotating several kinds of high end canned and raw foods keeps them interested. When I fed only one brand of food, they would eat it one day but not go near it again for several days. When I rotate in several kinds, they eat much better. No diarrhea at all! I also give Fortiflora nightly mixed with water in a syringe and my cats love it.

HI,

I was just reading posts and my cat is 17 years old and has pancreatis and IBS.  Unlike most cats he still has an appetite and continues to eat DD venison canned.  I give him some throughout the day mixed with water so it is mushy.  I give him fluids at home when he needs them.  currently on that really bitter med but I also use empty capsules and give it to him that way.  B12 shots are done weekly but the last one made no difference.  Was doing well, but the last two days he has been throwing up a lot, and has diarrhea.  I was told by a vet about a product called juice plus powder.  Was wondering if anyone has tried it?  Also what is the raw enzymes you have tried?  I give the powdered probotic in his food.. flortifora.

I know he is old, but he still has spunk left in him.  He mostly stays on my bed on his heated bed.  Any suggestions?  I don't want to go to a steriod because I was told that while it might work great initially he made take a downward spiral and then you have no where to turn.  I do believe he has cancer in his intestine but I am not having him opened up to confirm this because I know he won't make it.

looking for advice.

The probiotic I used in capsule form is Proviable CD and Pan 5X is the pancreatic enzyme, also in capsule, that one is given twice a day. Pan5X you can gat online from Progressive Labratory. Proviable I also buy online from ProbioticSmart.com. Ask your vet about giving your cat 1/4 of a Cerenia every 24 hours for nausea. It works real well for my cat. My vet also started my cat on C-ursodiol 60 mg once every 24 hours to keep sludge from forming in the gut, it keeps the gallbladder functioning properly. With Proviable and Cerenia, the symptoms should disappear. Keep me posted! Good luck!

I forgot to mention my cats are no longer on Fortiflora cause the proviable takes its place and my cats eat 100% raw food with a little freeze-dried chicken sprinkled on the top to entice them to eat more. The freeze-dried chicken is made by Wholelife and I get that online too.

I just came across this post in search for help for my kitty! I've taken her to two different vets! I first noticed she wasn't eating her food 2 days ago so I kept a close eye on her, and then that night she threw up clear liquid. The next morning she threw up clear liquid twice more. So I decided to make an appointment with the vet. A couple hours before the appointment she had one really stinky green diarrhea and threw up again. After the visit to the vet, he just said it felt like she might have bacteria infection in her intestines so he gave her Metronidazole. He gave her 250mg pills to take twice a day. She's 6 months old and 4 lbs. I gave her the medicine the first night but the next morning she was not having it. She hasn't ate or drank this entire day. The next day I dropped off a stool sample to the vet, told them she's still not eating and can't give her the medicine. They gave me liquid fork of the medicine. Unsatisfied with their effort, I took her to a different vet. Next vet decided to run some blood work and x-rays...couldn't find anything. So they gave her a fluid pack and anti nausea medicine and want me to call them in the morning. So now it's been 3 days of no food. This vet said the first one prescribed too much dosage of the medicine. She advised she wouldn't still continue with the medicine but I'm worried that if she does have an infection or something that I should be giving her the medicine. I'm lost!

The best advice I can give you is to go to another vet.  The green diarrhea is worrisome and can be an indication of a problem with the liver.  Not eating will cause hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver which can lead to liver failure.  Of course if nothing is staying down then syringe feeding isn't going to do any good, been there done that.  There is medication that can be given for nausea as well as an appetite stimulate but those only treat symptoms and do not treat the cause.  They can make it possible to get food into the kitty.  The metro is a very bitter medicine that is why it is hard to give.  My vet gives it with the pills cut up and placed in empty gel caps so kitty doesn't taste it.  The metro is what is normally given for GI issues because along with being an antibiotic it has anti-inflammatory properties.

I don't know where you live but do you have any feline specialists or a vet school in your area?  Your kitty is obviously very ill and will become even more ill with not eating.

The second vet I took her to today was a feline vet. She had the green poo twice but today she hasn't thrown up or had diarrhea. She had soft poo that smelled but wasn't green. Would you continue with the liquid Metro? I don't want to make her stomach more upset. Oh I forgot that the on the xray you could see that she had extreme gas.

Yes I would continue the metro.  Have you tried syringe feeding her or hand feeding her?  There are videos on youtube to show you how to do it.  The main thing is to use a smooth pate type food, put it in the side of her mouth and go slow.  You can also try tempting her with things like tuna, meat baby food that doesn't have garlic or onion in it.  Beechnut is the purest one.  If she isn't eating or you can't find a way to get food into her by tomorrow I would call the vet again.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the info you shared. I have 2 3 mo old kittens and the male Figaro suddenly came down with clear vomit, diarrhea and is refusing to eat. (4 days now) I can syringe feed him some sugar water and he seems to pick up after that for about 30 min and then just lays around again. I took him to the vet and the same FLV testing neg, no parasites, sq fluids. I honestly cant afford another visit. I'm just hoping he turns the corner. I couldn't afford the full lab panel to check for pancreatitis or LFT function. Again just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story! All the information was so helpful and encouraging. Praying for a miracle this is my 5 yr olds first kitten and she will be so devastated if he doesn't make it.
