I just brought home my newest addition Ava, a 5 wk old kitten, I just noticed that she keeps going over to the litter box and meowing, then digging around and squatting, (I am not sure if she is urinating, I don't think so) then meowing and squatting again. Is this normal, my other 2 cats never did this, or could she have some kind of infection? Any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm sorry I don't have much advice for you, but I would suggest taking her to the Vet. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!
Good luck!

Please take her to the vet as quickly as possible if there is no urine in the box (you should be able to see the moist litter) or if she is doing this squatting and mewing a lot. At her young age a urinary tract infection is really bad news and not something to ignore.

Thank you for your concern, I am planning on calling the vet first thing in the morning. I checked the box and there is urine in there, also she is the only cat using this particular litter box at this time because she is a new addition to the household and I am introducing her to my other pets slowly. Thanks again.

Dear Tarav,
actually I think to take just a five little old kitten is a great responsibylity! I've never-ever let to take anyone a five-weeks-old kitten from my cattery. But it's jast IMHO.
And about meowing while going to the litter box. I had a kitten who always "told" me when she went to the box and did her "business" there.

Ok well your first post said you didn't think she was urinating at all so that is why I was concerned.

I would have like for this kitten to stay with her mom until she was older but unfortunately her mom was hit by a car, They were outside strays, a Co-worker brought 4 kittens into the Dog grooming shop where I work 4 days ago I just brought her home 2 days ago). When I saw little Ava's face ( I just could not resist, she is all gray and fuzzy and will sit on my lap or sleep in my arms all day, I was prepared to take care of a kitten this young though because my Kramer (8 mo old) was only 3 wks when I found him abandoned outside, he was almost dead when I found him but I weaned him and nursed him back to health, now he is the happiest kitten always willing to torment my older cat Ginger (7 yrs old). SO I guess my point is that I am a sucker and will take on the responsability for any animal if I have to. Thank you for the advice on the meowing, I did notice that she is urinating so Maybe she is just letting me know that she is being a good girl, but I think that just to be safe when she sees the vet for her shots I will ask about it. Thanks again.

Bless you for being a sucker, like so many others here are!
If she is urinating a lot, in small amounts, I would take her in quickly- she could have a UTI and in one so young, this could cause some major problems. If you notice her straining, I would run her in as well. Don't take any chances, if you are unsure, seek professional help for her. Good luck-she sounds lovely!
