I don't know if this is being reported anywhere else. At 4, an armed gunman broke into a classroom building at Case Western Reserve Univeristy. Two people have been shot, and about 50 people are still in the building, possibly being held hostage.

Please keep the people in the building and the emergency workers in your thoughts and prayers. Several SWAT teams have moved into position, and as far as has been reported, they haven't had contact with the gunman.

Please pray this ends with no lives lost.

Wow, that's scary! I hope SWAT teams around the nation have learned from the mistakes made at Columbine. I hope their training has prepared them for this situation and they can take this guy out without further casualties.

The latest report says 47 people are in the building, including a woman who is 7 months pregnant
EMS was able to go into the building and get 3 more injured people. This is really horrible.

It seems that the police and SWAT teams are going through the building room by room to rescue everyone in the building. The problem is that the building is a "modern" building-there are no right angles at all in the building. So, there are a lot of places to hide.

One station is reporting that 2 people are dead
No one is saying anything, but it sounds like one of those may be the gunman. 2 of those shot are stable at a local hospital. People are now waving from the windows, which is a very good sign.

One person absolutely confirmed dead by the hospital, not the shooter. The pregnant woman has gotten out of the building, and is in stable condition.

They have someone in custody! The police chief just announced that they have taken the person that they think is the shooter, and that this is over! They are now just getting all of the people who are hidden in the building out and back to their families.

They managed to move most of the people in the building into a "safe room" and out of the building within the past few hours. Unfortunately, it's still not clear how many people have been hurt or worse. It seems like some others may have lost their lives tonight.

Thank God this is all over. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. Please keep the families of those hurt and lost tonight in your thoughts.

Oh my gosh... this is the first I heard of this. I missed the news today and this is the first chance I got to check the board since earlier this afternoon. I'm so glad they have the shooter in custody! What was he thinking???

Cassie, I don't know if it was a rhetorical question, but I actually know a bit about it.

Spree Killers are often very mentally unstable (as opposed to serial killers who are very cold and calculating). They hold a grudge against society, so in their warped minds the people in whatever place they go to HAVE done something to them. Everyone is to blame. Many times these people are Paranoid Schitophenics (sp), and extreme cases at that. Something happens that makes them "snap" and that sets their plan in motion. The majority of spree killers either kill themselves when they feel their rampage is done (i.e. Erik and Dylan at Columbine), or "Suicide by Cop" by forcing a shootout.

Luckily, these cases in the overall picture are pretty rare.

Well, we've learned a bit more about the shooter. He was a 52 (or 62, reports conflict) year old ex-student. He had graduated in 1999 with an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. He had set up a website after he graduated, and thought that an employee of the university was hacking in and altering the website. He sued the university, and it was dismissed. His appeal was dismissed just a few weeks ago. The building he took over is the new home of the Management school. So, it seems like Heidi had it right, he was trying to right a wrong that only existed in his mind.

He was in the hospital with 2 gunshot wounds, but was released. The Attorney General is planning on charging him with murder (at the least) on Monday.
