Should I name the foster kittens?

Would you bother? I've got 7 kittens sitting here nameless. I don't know if I should name them or not.

I think the one I saved is going to be named lucky. I have to say it still chills me to the bone that I almost let her die. I saw her in the box, lifeless, all 4 legs stiff as a board and she was cold to the touch. (chilled) but for some reason, even though I thought she was already dead, I picked her up and warmed her between my hands and she is fine now!!

I know, you're sick of hearing that. it's the first time I've ever saved a life. But it chills me to think that I almost let her go.....

OK back on topic. Would you bother naming them?

I would absolutely name them! I did with a litter that I fostered several years ago. It gets tough to not have a name to call each individual after awhile. And it's fun to pick names! I'd maybe wait until you're sure of genders, but after that have a ball - you get to pick 7 names for these babies!

Yes i would as well. Their little people now who need names

I think you should name them! They need names, too! Cute or original names can help the babies get adopted when the time comes, too, plus you will want something to call them.

I like calling the one who almost died Lucky! Maybe you can find names for the other kittens that would go with Lucky. Maybe like Chance and Dice or something.

They are so cute!

ok i'll name them. I think i might have just been looking for approval

I would name them. Maybe let them get a little older and see about their personalities, but they definitely need names. Be warned though...I have a problem where if I actually name a kitten, it doesn't leave my house! My last 3 (Gizmo, Corky and Missy) were only supposed to be fosters but after naming them I couldn't let them go!

Yes my friend... you should!.. no matter if after they are adopted and changed the name... the Idea is you gives a bit of love in this way...

Well, if you were looking for approval, you've certainly found it!

The new group I am working with, it seems no one ever names the kittens. They must get some kind of name when they go for adoption, but I haven't figured that out yet. All I know is, I've talked to three different people with, um, like 15 kittens and none of them had names! I asked a few people, and like calico2222 said, they won't name them because then they get attached.

Well, I've already decided, after only fostering for about 2 1/2 months, that all kittens I foster will have names. For me, the whole idea is to get attached! To bond, to let the kitten get some good human bonding and love. If my heart breaks when they leave, I know I've done a good job! Plus this way, I can remember every one of them as an individual.

Maybe I'm glutton for punishment or just trying to become a crazy cat lady with a million fosters that never left... Who knows!

I give names to all my kittens - whether they stay or are adopted. Most times the adoptive parents keep the name I pick out. I hate not giving them names

Ling's brothers were Ping and Pong (adopted together) and sisters - Ying and Yang (adopted together)

even the ferals have names - they don't respond to them, but i named them anyway!

Lucky
Chance
Blackjack
Casino
Roulette [nice for a girl or bicolor]
Vegas
A.C. [Atlantic City]
S'Port [that's Shreveport, LA's CB name, btw]
Baccarat
Lotto
Keno

Pachinko
Poker
Faro
Shoe
Backgammon... the possibilities are ENDLESS!

I name all my fosters, and even the adult ferals who I release

So yeah, go ahead and name them - you know you want to!

I think you should name the kittens. Pick a theme - a favorite movie and characters ... or book.... or since you're a computer guy you would definitely be in your rights to use those terms. Tap into your heritage - and use names from your ethinic background, like Irish or Italian - whatever you happen to be.

The kitten you revived could also be named Milagro - miracle in Spanish. (pornounced mih-LAH-grow)

Vida - which means life

Asha which is Sanskrit for hope/life

Aisha (pronounced eye-EE-shuh) which is African for life.

Eve - means life in Hebrew

Zoe - same thing in Greek

Boys names :

Johnathan and Matthew both mean God's gifts.

Gabriel - the angel
(That may be too religious for you!! LOL!!! I don't know!)

Sure should. Even if they are not going to be with you forever it would be nice to have names to associate with them after they have been adopted...
Sure, why not? They won't respond to them, anyway!

Pick a theme, and go with it. As someone else said, clever names help kittens get adopted, for some reason.

I've always thought giving names was half the fun with kittens although i'm one to take forever to pick a name I still love to do it. let us know what you choose
post #16 of 23
My kittens responded to their names! By the time Ling and her littermates were 2 months old, they would look up when you called their names - ignored you if it was not their name

I agree name away. Just be careful of gender specific names. A friend named a kitten she was raising "Precious" turns out he's a boy with a girly name!!1

You have to name them! They can't be black-white, white RF, white LF, white RR, white LR, boxer ...I forget the other one forever!

ETA ...sex them first!

In January, I tried fostering for the first time. Within a week, I had changed their names and decided to keep them. Once I started calling them by the names that I had chosen, I was reeled in.

Well now. I've spent some time thinking on this. I have to say, the thought that keeps coming back is to name them after the seven dwarfs. The number fits.

I'm not sure what else... I want to use a theme though.

But could you really pin the name "Dopey" on a kitten?
